Tunesday: SXSW Music Festival Kicks Off Today!

Festival season is officially underway! The SXSW Music Festival starts today and runs through the weekend. I’m heading down tomorrow to check out some of the amazing music, south by southwest fashion and soak up the energy of Austin during its biggest event of the year. This will be my third time traveling to Austin in the past year, and I’m pretty stoked to go back and catch up with some old friends, and also hang out with the guys from Yours Truly, who I met over the summer at Outside Lands in San Francisco.

I’ll have more info on what I’m going to be doing down there in a little bit – for now, here’s a look at some of some of my favorite bands who will be performing down at SXSW this year!

Alabama Shakes

Their debut album hasn’t event come out yet but  I’m already a big fan of this band and have been itching to see them live since first hearing their song “Hold On.” Singer Brittany Howard’s soulful voice is captivating and chill-inducing – catch them at the locations below, or if you’re lucky, at Yours Truly’s In My Room performance!

Wednesday 3/14 4pm @ Radio Day Stage Austin Convention Center

Wednesday 3/14 11:15 pm @ Stubb’s

Friday 3/16 12am @ Easy Tiger Patio

Band of Skulls

This British band has been growing on me ever since 2009’s Baby Darling Dollface Honey. They just released their second album, Sweet Sour, last month – I love the variety of the songs on their albums, they can rock out and also make really pretty songs in which singer Emma Richardson’s sweet voice shines.

Wednesday 3/14 11pm @ Haven

Haim

I just heard about these girls recently when Yours Truly was raving about them, so I checked them out and they kinda blew me away – a trio of sisters from Los Angeles, they have yet to release an album but are already getting buzz as ones to watch with their fiery vocals and musical abilities. Check out their myspace here.

3/16 8pm @ Karma Lounge

3/17 10pm @ Lamberts

Houses

One of my favorite albums of late is All Night by the duo Dexter Tortoriello and Megan Messina, who make up Houses. The couple moved to a remote cabin in Hawaii, where they decided to make music that would eventually become this album, a beautiful atmospheric album that “comes from a place of love and ease.”

Thursday 3/15 1am @  The Hideout

Gary Clark Jr.

I first saw Gary Clark Jr. play at the XPN festival over the summer and for me, he was the highlight of the weekend. He brings back an old soulful kind of blues rock that I love and he can seriously shred a guitar – he’s incredible live and I can’t wait to see him again in his hometown – he is also doing a Yours Truly In My Room show!

Wednesday 3/14 12:45am @ La Zona Rosa

Friday 3/16 12pm @ Radio Day Stage Convention Center
