I’m one of those people who, when a book I’ve read is made into a movie, either doesn’t see the movie or is disappointed by it. It’s mostly due to the fact that I’m not really a movie person – it’s hard for me to sit still for such a long period of time. With books, I can carry it around with me, reading when I have time, dogearing pages and coming back to it later. One of the best books I’ve read lately was The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo – the story of a man named Mikael Blomkvist who is hired to solve the mystery of a missing woman, and the girl who he enlists to help him – a troubled, tattooed and pierced girl named Lisbeth Salander. I won’t go into too much detail for those who haven’t read/seen it and wish to, but the book was one I had trouble putting down. Suspenseful and difficult to read at times (mostly due to hardships Salandar experiences), it’s a book I felt like I had to finish –I found myself intrigued by Salandar and wanting to know more about her.
I had heard a lot about the movie so I decided to watch it a couple weeks ago. A challenge often faced with movies made from books is fitting everything into the short two hours – and although the movie felt really long, I did think they left a lot out. But making up for all of it was Rooney Mara – I don’t think anyone else could have played this part. She was magnetic – in every scene she’s in, you can’t take your eyes off her. She managed to add a vulnerability to such a tough, edgy character that was fascinating to watch.I highly recommend checking it out if you haven’t yet!

So far I only saw the swedish original movies (really, really good, all three of them!), but I want to see this one as well.
If you want, go check out the swedish movies as well. From what I’ve heard, there are quite a few differences on the adaption of the book.
I think comparing a book with a movie is missing the point. If you are judging both purely on the storyline, then of course you will like the book better if you read it first, simply because it’s new and the mystery is still there, plus the book has more detail. A movie includes much more than just the storyline: you get beautiful cinematography, amazing acting, costumes, set design, it’s just a it’s a completely different artistical medium. i guess for most people it’s a good idea to go see the movie first to be able to enjoy the visuals and then add to the storyline by reading the book.
I’ve also only so-far seen the Millenium trilogy films, which is why I don’t know if I’ll like Rooney Mara’s portrayal over Noomi Rapace’s supremely badass job.
I loved the movie…havent read the book…but im afraid the movie has spoilt the excitement of the book. great film!

The movie is very good, I think better than the Swedish version because if you read the book Rooney Mara captures Lisbeth Salander perfectly. But…..book are ALWAYS better than the movies, but for the movies always being a let down after reading the book, the american movie wasn’t bad at all. I think they picked perfect characters for Lisbeth, Blomkvist, and Berger.
I really loved the books. I saw the first of the Swedish movies and was so disappointed, not by what they left out, but by what they changed. I actually liked the Rooney Mara version better than the Swedish one, because I did not think the changes in it were as drastic as the Swedish one. The books were of course better than the movies!
The books are amazing and I am disappointed there will be no more. I was so captured by the books because of Larson’s characters he created especially Salanders. This odd girl that portrays her self as quiet and ignorant when really she is so strong and intelligent. I saw the movies while I was still reading the book which I never do. I usually give it a couple of months or a year so the book isnt as fresh in my mind, that way I can view the movie while not judging it based on the book. I like the swedish and the American verison of the movie. But when it comes down to Salander, Rooney Mara definitely intrigued me more. I liked the characters they picked for the American film much more than the swedish film.
I’ve read all the books and seen all the movies. Its hard to weigh films against the book because it will always be found lacking. I love Noomi Rapace, Swedish girl with the dragon tattoo (she played the fortune teller in the most recent Sherlock Holmes). The Swedish films are incredible, even if the American one conveyed a little more depth in Lisbeth’s personal feelings, also Daniel Craig is more attractive than the Swedish actor that played Blomkist, staying closer to the books desciption of him as an attractive man. I liked them both. There is a touch more realism to the Swedish films because that’s what the books were written in. And Noomi Rapace is more petite like Lisbeth is supposed to be and shes a MFBA.
