Friday Tunes

LP is an artist I accidentally discovered at SXSW, and boy am I glad I did.  She and her band were performing at the hotel San Jose’s outdoor patio, where they also had booths set up with vintage and other goodies. I was browsing around the booths and her voice was so powerful that I literally had to stop and watch the rest of her set.  She just released a live album called Into The Wild this week and it has quickly moved up as one of my most-listened to.  Seriously, do yourself a favor and go listen to the entire thing.

I used to think that Jack White — well, actually, the White Stripes — were a little overrated. That all changed when I saw him live. It was with the Raconteurs, but I couldn’t tear my eyes away from White – he moved like an animal stalking prey, from playing the piano to shredding the guitar to spitting out poignant lyrics, never missing a beat.  Until that point, I had never realized just how talented this man is.  I was pretty excited to listen to his full solo album, Blunderbuss, which came out last Friday – and like everything he does, it’s fantastic.  I think “Love Interruption” is still my favorite track so far, but I like “Take me with you when you go” a lot too.

The latest from Toro Y Moi, “June 2009,” also came out this week, and while I haven’t had a chance to listen to it all the way through more than once, I like what I hear so far. His albums are such a unique sonic experience – this one is less than 30 minutes total, but every track seems to have so many layers of sound that it sometimes takes a few listens to really peel each one back and appreciate everything that’s going on.  It’s definitely a fun album though and ideal for this time of year  – I think my favorite track so far is the mellow “Warm Frames,” it sounds like a summer afternoon.
