Lemon Benefits: How to use lemons for everything!

The benefits of lemons have been popping up everywhere lately! Whether it be a homeopathic treatment for a toothache or an all natural way to clean your home, lemons can do it all. From Whole Living, to this guest post, to other blogs I follow, I’ve been reading about the magical fruit so much lately. With so many fun facts and ideas as to how one can use these little sour guys, I wanted to give you all a roundup on some of my favorite findings.

Detoxifier

Try drinking lemon water first thing in the morning or 20 – 30 minutes prior to eating to stimulate gastric juices.

You’ll Need:

1/2 inch knob of ginger sliced thinly

Juice from ½ lemon

2 cups boiling water

Honey to taste

Directions:

Pour boiling water over the ginger, let steep for about five minutes, and then add lemon juice and honey to taste.

Housecleaning

Kill microwave smells: Fill a small glass bowl with water and half a lemon, and stick in the microwave for five minutes.

Polish wood:  In a spray bottle, add 2 tsp olive oil and  juice from ½ a lemon to ½ cup warm water. Spray onto a slightly damp cotton cloth and wipe furniture.

Metals and Cutting Boards:  Sprinkle salt over half a lemon and scrub away. Then rinse clean.

Mouth Health

Lemon water can be used in dental care. Apply lemon juice to a toothache to get rid of pain, or massage it on the gums to stop bleeding. You can also freshen breath like the Ancient Romans did by gargling lemon juice for 30 seconds.

Radiant Skin

Treating from the inside out: Lemon is rich in vitamin C which means that ingesting the fruit on a regular basis is great for detoxifying and sending antioxidants to the skin

You can also treat it from the outside in: Combine lemon zest with sugar and soak the mixture with olive oil for 30 minutes to make a lemony homemade scrub. Rub it on your elbows, ankles, and knees to get rid of those dry patches.

All great tips!! Careful with the last one though – I’ve learned from experience that sensitive skin, or skin that may have forms of psorisis does not react well to the acidity of lemon juice.

I second that caution about putting lemon on your skin- citrus is phototoxic, meaning it can cause you to burn more easily in the sun, so don’t do this tip before going outside, do it before bed or something.

I love lemon in hot water (almost like a tea). I find it helps with my sinuses.

Although lemon juice IS a great breath freshener (I serve/bartend, and will rub a wedge on my tongue if I don’t have any gum, works great!), I would advise against gargling the juice or applying it directly to your teeth, because citric acid destroys enamel (which will lead to more cavities and increased staining).

I use it to fade acne scars but i use it before bed because it probably does cause you to burn more easily if you are out in the sun.
