When I was younger, we had a white wooden mantel in our dining room. I didn’t get it. Why is that there? What’s the point of having something that looks like a fireplace but in actuality is no such thing? A decade and a half later, I finally get it. I totally get it. Mantels are incredible. They’re standalone pieces that can become the focal point of any room. There are so many different kinds – wood, brick, stone – and decorating them is so much fun! You can define the tone of an entire room with the items that top (or don’t top) your mantel.

There was at least one mantel in every house I lived in growing up. My flat has no mantel and I seriously miss it! A living room seems empty to me without a mantel.
