Above: Phoebe Schuch looking lovely in our Ladder Fringe Tassel Necklace with her adorable kitten, Baku!
Last week we had the pleasure of visiting the (gorgeous) home of Philadelphia-based interior designer Phoebe Schuh of PS & Daughters. What I love most about Phoebe’s home is that it’s so much more than pretty things carefully arranged in pretty ways. Whether it’s her stained glass window blinds that once belonged to her antique-collecting grandparents or the vintage kneeling chair that was a result of a multi-year thrift quest, every piece in Phoebe’s home seems to have a story. These stories left us itching to find out some of Phoebe’s tips and tricks, so we threw ten important questions at her!
If I could describe my design style in 3 words, it would be… “add more color”.
My biggest source of inspiration is… travel. It changes my entire perspective on use of colors and materials.
My design philosophy is… layering. Layering old with new and building on collection and accessories creates a rich worldly look.
The best way to make a small space feel big is… to concentrate on one focal piece of furniture per room. Don’t scramble lots of smaller pieces together. A pointed statement creates a stronger look and a bigger space!
When working, my favorite thing to listen to is… Bossa-nova. I created a station in Pandora and it’s so relaxing.
My favorite room in the house is… my living room. It has high ceilings with exposed beams, and lots of windows with great light.
The one design rule that’s OK to break is… painting over wood cabinets. If you don’t like cherry wood, it’s okay! It’s your kitchen!
The one design rule I will never break is… none! Nothing is sacred.
The best-unexpected color palette is… changing the application. Try painting the trim your featured color and leaving the walls neutral.
One piece of advice I’d give an interior just starting out is… to have a specialty. Mine is art consultation with a designer who’s particular focus on local galleries and artists.

How brilliant is this fireplace? When Phoebe moved into her home (just a few months ago), the fireplace was completely covered in white paint. She just knew there was something beautiful underneath, so she scrubbed the entire thing herself – so amazing!
Phoebe and a friend made this desk from scratch! That’s something I would love to accomplish in my lifetime. Also important to note is the “pooping dog lamp” on top of said desk. Phoebe, you are one of a kind, girl.
This staircase above was one of my favorite parts of Phoebe’s home. I love how one room is on its own little floor!
I love this little setup on top of Phoebe’s kitchen table. How gorgeous is that tree stump? And the airplant in the glass vase is a small obsession of mine.
Thanks for having us, Phoebe! I’m sure we’ll be seeing you around town :)

Thanks Brigette,
Phoebe’s ideas are really helpful. The design philosophy of “layering” proposed by Phoebe can give awesome results. The advice to concentrate on one focal piece of furniture per room is personally helpful as I am one of the interior designers in Chennai
where small space is a big challenge. This trick will help me to make small spaces appear bigger.
This is what going bold. the design has a special style and character. As an interior designer for flats, I think this style is a great way to give a rustic feeling for flats in the urban area.
Awesome! I adore Phoebe’s fashion sensibilities and her amazing attention to detail. gratitude!
