Our Chat With Dream Catcher Designer Catherine Rising

We love the look and feel of dream catchers. They add a positive, creative energy to any space. We’re especially fond of the dream catchers made by Catherine Rising, the designer we’ve worked with to offer our fans the chance to shop for a dream catcher of their own. We wanted to know more about Catherine and her creative process, and if you read the interview below, you’ll get to know more about this creative soul and what inspires her.

What made you decide to start creating dream catchers?

“My grandmother could make anything.  She decorated her house with her creations.. pillows, textiles, macrame. She also spent time living and worked on Indian Reservations, and this informed her style, and that of her home.  Growing up I wore dresses she made, and moccasins, headpieces, and jewelry from the reservations. I made dream catchers using grape vine that grew in our back yard.

I went to school for fine arts, but I’ve always been really interested in story telling, symbolic imagery, and craft. Much of my work today is informed by pieces from my childhood, as I continue to be inspired by that imagery.”
Is there anything specific that inspires you in creating work?

“My childhood, my teachers, New York City, yoga retreats, Laurie Cabot, dead stock factories, hiking, magic, the summer of love, the natural world, the Internet, Burlington, patterns, stained glass, caftans, costumes, ghost stories, The Incredible String Band, gypsy caravans, hootenannies, folk lore, and fine artist friends.  I keep a visual journal via tumblr.. and use it to organize these ideas. ”
What is your favorite part about your creative process?

“Gathering materials!  I love digging through boxes of beads and trimmings at dead-stock factories in New York, and filling my boyfriend’s back pack full of rocks and drift wood from camping trips and hikes. The vintage pieces have so much history, and I have such a strong connections to each piece I find.  It’s a really exciting and inspirational process.”

Where do you draw inspiration for décor in your own home?

“I love collecting a variety of new and old and juxtaposing high and low end pieces.  My style is mostly informed by growing up in Vermont, and I hold that hippie house aestetic dear to my heart. I do most of my shopping at thrift stores, and flea markets (I love the Brooklyn Flea) but I also cherish special pieces I buy from local designers, and boutiques. ”

Where is the perfect spot to hang a dream catcher (or two!)?

“At the head of the bed, in a window, above your altar… I love a large grouping or even wall full of dream catchers.. I gave a mini dream catcher to a friend who hung it on a wall with other good luck charms.  I think that’s really sweet. ”

What creative projects are coming up next for you?

“I’d love for the creative process to be more of a collective.  I learned so much about design from working closely with friends in a fine art/ studio setting, and working as an intern for a jewelry designer.  I am really greatful for my teachers and friends, and I’d like to continue this process, by offering that experience to others. “
