DIY Apothecary Bottle Necklace

UPDATE: This post originally ran February 22, 2012 but lately I have become re-enamored with the idea of apothecary bottle necklaces! I particularly love this little one Brigette has, and I really want to fill one with sand from the beach so I can wear summer around my neck all winter long…

I’ve always loved apothecary bottles… they’re adorable and perfect for holding perfumes, beads or other tiny things. They also make super cute necklaces, and there’s so much you can do with them!  I originally had the idea of putting little rolled up love notes in them as Valentine’s Day gifts, and even though that holiday has passed I still think it would be a really sweet gift for a friend or loved one, with a meaningful quote or message inside.

What you need: apothecary bottles (I ordered some from amazon), necklace chains, jump rings, eyepins, and glue.

I was able to stick the eyepin right into the cork of the apothecary bottle – but if you aren’t able to, try sticking a needle through first. Attach the jump ring to the eyepin, and then attach your chain. You may want to dab a little bit of glue around the eyepin so that it stays put.

I had a few ideas that I wanted to try out for these. For the first one I wrote a quote on a piece of paper with raw edges, with the idea of making a little “message in a bottle.”

Roll up your little message and stick it in the bottle! I used a bobby pin to help push it in.

For the second one, I loved the idea of filling the bottle with petals from a sentimental flower :)

I filled the third necklace with little turquoise stones – I really love the idea of filling one with sand, too :)

I’ve seen this at Christmas but w/ a small amount of white crystals, about 5 black seed beads, pieces of a stick about a 1/2 inch long and a small piece of orange material = melted snowman! I love all the ideas!

So cute! Where did you get the necklaces? Are you planning on wearing them all together? What lengths are the necklaces? Haha, sorry for all the questions :) Can’t wait to get started!
