The final post in this month’s style muse series features Brooklyn chef and teacher Danielle Florio, a chef and host for the amazing Williamsburg supper club called Whisk & Ladle and teacher at City Smarts. She is an inspiration to us not only for her style but for her unique approach to the dining experience. Whisk & Ladle was born out of a love for the traditional 5-course structure of the dinner party and “the deeply entrenched belief that all things civilized and debaucherous find common ground on a dining room table.” Read on for more about Danielle and her classic, New York style!

Describe your personal style in three words.
Sunny, vintage, modern…..? I’m from upstate NY so I buy most of my clothing at thrift stores/g-sales up there… I also host ‘gals clothing swaps’ at my apartment regularly so I am always finding awesome cast-offs. I think I give my 2nd hand duds a revitalized look once I incorporate them into my wardrobe. I’ve also been loving bright colors since this past spring.
What is your go-to outfit?
High waisted pleated skirt or skinnies, a smart button up, and a scarf for a splash of color. I’m a teacher so my go-to’s have to be streamlined and on the sophisticated side. Loving the menswear silhouette’s these last few years.
Who are your personal style icons?
The ladies featured in ‘Advanced Style!’ Check out these incredible women: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nWKTfqivbRQ. Oh yeah… also: New & York & City.
What is your must-have beauty product?
Origins ‘Make a Difference’ facial moisturizer & Make Up Forever’s orange lipstick.
What essential items do you always have with you when traveling?
Crossword puzzles, coffee pour over kit, mini backgammon set, nail polish, & sunglasses…..I am a happy camper.
What is the best beauty tip you’ve ever learned?
Wear lots of sunscreen.

Favorite healthy snack?
Grain salad! I make a batch nearly every week and scarf it when I don’t have time to make a proper meal: Israeli couscous, roasted sweet potatoes, roasted peppers, roasted carrots, pistachios, dried apricots, feta, parsley, & lemon. YUM.
Most-played album on your iPod right now:
‘Channel Orange’ by Frank Ocean. It’s been the go-to for over 3 months. I become highly fixated on certain albums… ahem. Also the Brooklyn Soul album which is a mash-up of Jay-Z’s ‘American Gangster’ and a bunch of old Marvin Gaye tracks. It’s incredible. Another important Florio standby.
Can you tell us a little bit about what you’re working on now?
Working to expand City Smarts, my private tutoring business! I love my job – my students are hilarious, inspiring, and exhausting, (in a good way). Also planning the 5th annual ‘Whisk & Ladle hearts CMJ event,’ where we’ll be hosting a bunch of bands here at our loft and serving everyone homemade ice cream cones & cocktails. It’s a blast and one of our absolute favorite events to host. This year we’re featuring: Los Encantados, Among Savages, Conveyor, J Thoven, Baby Alpaca, Kuroma, Cities Aviv & Levek.
