Get the 90’s Kate Moss look

UPDATE: This post originally ran on the 7th of May, but because we’re in love with all things 90’s right now we thought we’d bring it back .

From our in-house Beach Designer: Early 1990’s Kate Moss is not only my favorite era of hers but it’s also the most perfect example of that no make-up look.  Here are some helpful hints to getting that effortless natural bare look… It really is oh-so-simple.

Firstly, do your daily cleanse and moisturize, but make sure when you wash your face to do so with cold water — this wakens up your face and leaves you feeling bright-eyed and bushy-tailed. If you need a base/foundation, add it! I used Nars Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer with that ever-important SPF 30 — try to avoid getting it on your eyelids. Next, use an ever-so-tiny bit of Vaseline across the top of your lids, using your ring fingers to apply. Use a blending brush to remove/blend any excess.

Sweep a coat of Sephora’s Professional Clear Natural Mascara  onto your lashes and finish the eyes by applying Anastasia Brow Gel across those eyebrows, keeping in place any waifs and strays. Now for those flushed cheeks… Starting from the apple of the cheek, follow the cheek bone for about 1” and apply Cheek Stain in Natural Beauty by Tarte — you can either gently blend this with a powder blending brush or simply use your fingers as I did. If you have those gorgeous freckles, too, all the better for perfecting the look!

Finish by spraying some salt spray onto those locks (our homemade version is coming to you in a post soon) and braiding two plaits into the front of your locks… Kate Moss, eat your heart out!

Vaseline and tinted moisturizer is not so great for oily skin. Can I suggest a self setting cream shadow like MAC paint pot, Estee Lauder Double Wear Cream Shadow, or Maybelline EyeStudio Color Tattoo for the eyes and a mineral or powder foundation for skin with a setting spray like All-Nighter by Skindinavia for Urban Decay.

I’ve never tried vaseline for the lids, but since it’s always humid here I think it may work well.

Petroleum jelly isn’t good for you in general, but there are more skin and planet friendly alternatives out there!

Kate is obviously wearing more than clear mascara and vasoline on her eyes here. I expected a tutorial how to achieve that look, as the title and picture suggests.

Petroleum jelly is a by-product of the process used to make gasoline (petrol). I’m surprised that your beauty department would recommend using this product at all, let alone on such a sensitive area as the eyelid. It’s actually considered to be carcinogenic to the skin, so you may want to try finding another product that achieves the same result. At any rate, it doesn’t even look like she has a product like vaseline on her eyelids. It looks more like they used a black or charcoal grey eyeliner, then smudged it and topped it off with a smoky grey eyeshadow. Not your best beauty tutorial, FP.
