Peace Valley Lavender Farm + 5 Uses for Lavender

This is a guest post by Johnie Gall of DirtbagDarling.com

The smell of lavender is unlike any other, at once calming and invigorating, strong and subtle, and if you pay a visit to the Peace Valley Lavender Farm in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, you’ll get to smell like it for days! The beautiful farm is just an hour drive from the Free People offices, situated across the road from Lake Galena, and offers over 3,000 blooming lavender shrubs planted in neat rows outside of a wooden barn, which is packed to the brim with lavender-infused soaps, pillows, candles, dried bundles, and bottles of essential oils. Sure, you’ll smell great and fill your lungs with fresh country air, but here are five more uses for your new bundle of lavender that you may not have known about:

1. Insect Repellant – Lavender fends off both moths and mosquitoes. Stuff a satchel of dried lavender in your closet or mix a few drops of lavender essential oil with aloe vera and rub on your skin before heading out on your hike.

2. Ease Headaches and Stress – There’s a reason baby lotions are starting to smell like lavender—it’s a soothing, calming scent that helps your body relax. Aroma therapists use it for inhalation therapy, but you can do it right at home. Just mix five drops of essential oil with boiling water and inhale.

3. Treat Sunburn – Vinegar can help ease the pain of a burn, but it smells terrible. Opt for this recipe instead: Mix a few drops of essential oil with water and spray onto sunburned skin.

4. Grow Your Hair – Massage a few drops of essential oil onto your scalp every few nights and in a few months, you’ll see hair regrowth. Peace Valley Lavender Farm sells lavender shampoo and conditioner.

5. Disinfect Your Kitchen – Nurses used lavender to disinfect some hospitals during World War II. Fill a spray bottle with baking soda, lavender oil and water and store under your sink.

The Peace Valley Lavender Farm is located at 802 New Galena Road, Doylestown PA 18901. Hours and more information can be found at peacevalleylavender.com.

I’m a neuroscientist and do research on the olfactory nervous system (the sense of smell). This about lavender is true; it really works. Smell and emotions are directly connected in the brain; they are part of the same circuit, and lavender really does have a calming effect on the activity in this circuit. But you don’t need to be a nerd like me to know that :o) I am sure most people can feel this in some kind of way. Personally, I love lavender; I burn lavender oil all the time and have lots of lavender incense.

For our wedding we had a chocolate cake with lavender frosting! It was great. We used our organic high altitude French lavender. Just a little goes a long way. https://ancientwaysbotanicals.com/product/essential-oil/lavender-fine-organic-aoc-8/
