One of the main inspirations behind our November catalog was the work of Danish illustrator Kay Nielsen, whose gorgeous imagery has accompanied many of the fairy tales featured in our book. Like the stories themselves, fairytale illustrations stretch the realm of your imagination and allow you to lose yourself in a world where reality doesn’t exist. They are captivating to look at, and would make such amazing wall art. You can purchase prints of his work here.

Amazing work, I love old farytales book, and i just fell in love with this artist! Maybe i can find on internet an old book he illustrated to enlarge my collection… Thanks for this discovery!
So Incredibly enchanting & magical.
Love Kay Nielsen! I’m 6 years late, but how coincidental! I applied some years ago to design job with free people in December 2011, with pictures of my sketchbook(probably not the best idea looking back). This timing makes sense because they would have been designing the 2012 fall winter items. The sketchbook included pictures of Kay Nielsen images with ideas for designs I had sketched alongside. My cover letter included a bio of being inspired by fairy and folk tales. I guess they liked my ideas but didn’t want to hire me?
Here’s to the Danes!
