My Favorite Albums Of 2012 – And A Playlist

Deciding on my ten favorite albums of 2012 is no easy task. It’s fun to look back on all the new music that came out this year, though, and bring some amazing songs and albums back to the forefront of my mind.  It’s interesting to think about all the new bands I was introduced to and new music that made up the soundtrack to the past year of my life, and the memories that go along with them. It was hard enough to narrow this list down to ten let alone put them in order, so with that said here are my ten favorite albums of 2012 – in no particular order – as well as a playlist below! Let me know which albums you agree or disagree with, or any others you would include on the list!

First Aid Kit – The Lion’s Roar

I had heard of First Aid Kit before this year but it was this album that really made me a huge fan of them.  They have two of the loveliest voices I’ve heard and they completely blew me away with their talent live. I also had the opportunity to interview them earlier this year and they are such sweet, down to earth girls.

Neil Young & Crazy Horse – Psychedelic Pill

This is one of my favorites from the latter part of the year, and I’ve been listening to it a lot lately. Neil Young never ceases to amaze me – in addition to Psychedelic Pill he and Crazy Horse also released the album Americana this year.  Psychedelic Pill is much more the classic rocking Neil Young that I lean towards, and I can’t help but love it.

Alabama Shakes – Boys & Girls

This was one of my most personally anticipated albums of the year and it definitely didn’t let me down. I still listen to it all the time and I love their soulful rock and roll sound. Seeing them in Austin during this year’s SXSW was a highlight of this year, and they were kind enough to sign one of our Heart Strings charity guitars.

Grimes – Visions

Visions came out in January but I’ll admit it took me some time to really appreciate its genius. It really grew on me though and I love the atmospheric beauty of her sound.

Grizzly Bear – Shields

This is another album I’ve been waiting for, ever since I fell in love with them and their last album Veckatimest. They manage to create the most unusual, beautiful sounds and harmonies that haunt you and stay with you long after you hear them.

Tame Impala – Lonerism

I just got this album on vinyl and I think I love it even more now. I can never get enough good psychedelic rock and this is the best album of that genre this year, in my opinion.

Lord Huron – Lonesome Dreams

I’ve been listening to this almost nonstop since it came out in October and it’s one of those albums that you fall more and more in love with.  With each listen you discover different elements and a different song becomes your new favorite.

Beach House – Bloom

This album is perfection from start to finish.  I got to see them perform the majority of it live at their show at the Bowery Ballroom the night of the album’s release. There is something so profoundly moving about their music and being in their presence while they create it is truly special.

Wild Nothing – Nocturne

I was just introduced to this band this year but they became an instant favorite with their album Nocturne.  It’s one of those soothing, melodic albums that you can listen to over and over without ever tiring of it.

Dr. Dog – Be The Void

I may be a little biased because this band is from my hometown (here in Philly) and they’re a personal favorite, but I love everything they do.  They are constantly experimenting and coming out with new stuff but they never stray from what they love, and its especially evident in their live shows. They are so much fun to watch.

What were your favorite songs and albums of the year?
