The History Of Roshambo

When I first watched our February short film, I was completely in awe of its beauty. But I was also left wondering… what is Roshambo? It’s another name for the game we all have probably played, Rock Paper Scissors. The classic game is often used as a way of deciding something, similarly to a coin toss. The origin of the game dates back to the Chinese Han Dynasty, and by the 18th century it had spread to Japan where hand games of this nature were very popular. It did not reach the United States until the early 20th century, but by now it is ingrained in the minds of most, with fond memories of playing it as a child. While my memories of it involve saying “rock, paper, scissors, shoot!”, others say “ro, sham, bo!”  Some people think that there is a skill to the game, based on learning the behavior of your opponent and also trying to trick them. In our short film, it is sweetly used as a method of deciding what a couple’s fate will be.
