Love Letters: The Starting Line

This week’s edition of Love Letters focuses on two important parts of dating, and both relate to the beginning of things. If you have questions about dating, or how to start dating, or what to do when dating isn’t going quite the way you hoped it would, email me at blog@freepeople.com, and I’ll try to answer as many of your questions as possible. xo

Q: What should you do if you like a guy but he’s too clingy before you even start dating?

A: You’ve sort of answered your own question here, haven’t you? If you’re not in a relationship yet, but he’s doing something that makes you uncomfortable, or makes you question the time you spend with him, I think it is best to move on before things progress and one or both of you ends up with hurt feelings. “Too clingy” isn’t a good sign right of the bat.

Q: I am thinking of trying online dating. Which websites are best?

A: In my experience, there is no right or wrong dating site to try. It is very much a personal choice, and site activity can vary based on where you live. Not a lot of activity on OKCupid in your area? Try Match.com instead. Looking for something a little different? Try How About We. Play around with each site (many of which are either free or have free trials), and see which site you prefer. It is all about picking a site that makes you feel comfortable, and one that allows you to have fun. This should be a fun process for you. Keep your mind open and your spirits positive, and you should be able to connect with some really cool people. Don’t be afraid to move on to another site if you’re finding that you’re frustrated, confused, or bored with the current site that you’re on. There are plenty to try!

I totally agree with your answer to the first question. If you ever feel uncomfortable in the beginning of a relationship, you should reanalyze where it is going. I remember my fiancé giving me butterflies in the beginning, and making me so nervouse. At the same time I had an incredible sense of safety and assurance that gave me the green light to move forward. A relationship can be thrilling and stable at the same time!

I decided to start trying online dating about two months ago and it’s been a great experience! I recommend meeting quite a few people, even if you don’t think you’ll hit it off. Surprisingly, the men I wasn’t initially very attracted to ended up being the ones I liked most after meeting them! A word of advice: Don’t give anyone your phone number until after you meet them. This way if you don’t want to talk to the person again you don’t have to. Also, meeting for coffee is the best idea for the first meeting rather than beers or dinner. OKcupid.com is great and I’ve had friends who had luck with datingforhippies.com.

oh my god….. I have been there with question #1. Not even kidding. So I started to see this guy. I would say i’m heading out for the weekend….see my family or something and he would be like “well what am I supposed to do when your gone” Not in a cute way of joking/firlting…. like REALLY what am I going to do….So I just told him in a nice way like we should have ‘you and I’ time then ‘individual’ time, and he didn’t get it. It has been almost a year and he still texts me asking to hang. Some guys are too pushy and do not understand how to be alone for a weekend. :/

This is a topic which is close to my heart… Take care! Where are your contact details though?
