Desert Garden Inspiration From Palm Springs, CA

As soon as we pulled up to our house in Palm Springs last week, one thing that immediately struck me was how beautiful the plant life was – and how different it was to what I’m used to on the East Coast. I’ve always had a thing for desert plants — and I have lots of little potted succulents scattered all around my home — but to see them actually growing from the ground was so cool. There were so many different kinds of cacti… all different shapes and colors; some with flowers, some without. It was all too gorgeous not to share with you all. Here’s a taste of the plant life that surrounded our house in Palm Springs. I’m thinking I might have to create a little cacti garden to top off my kitchen table.

The plant above was my absolute favorite. I love the artichoke-like shape, and how the faded blue-green color contrasts with the black tips of each leaf.

We had an orange tree in our front yard! I was so excited.

There was even a mini succulent garden on the table in our backyard.

The keys to successful desert landscaping are knowledge and planning. In order to have a lively, functional garden that also has low water and maintenance requirements, you will need to make educated plant and hardscape choices.
