Did you know that today is National High Five Day? I love days like this that make you think about and appreciate such little, simple things, and it got me thinking about where this gesture even originated. Although the exact origination is up for debate, I learned that the original high five is most commonly attributed to professional sports – in particular, Dusty Baker and Glenn Burke of the 1970s Los Angeles Dodgers. They slapped hands as a celebratory gesture, and the rest is history. In the years since, the high five has become an internationally recognized symbol and can mean anything from congratulations to hello and goodbye. In a time when there is so much heartbreak in the world, it’s nice to celebrate something that symbolizes unity between two people. Happy National High Five Day! Go out and high five the next person you see :)
