4 Tricks To Make Perfume Last All Day

Take heed of these easy life hacks to maintain your signature scent all day long…

Scent holds a prestigious power — it is one of the few keys that can unlock and invite you into a memory, with one note transporting you to a specific place, event, person, or period of time. Perfume can, as a result, define you. It can becomes your signature, leaving an unwavering mark for people to remember you by.

Often though, it’s difficult to make your signature scent last without multiple applications. Perfume diminishes as the hours pass and, by day’s end, it seems to dissipate altogether. But no fear — here are a few tricks to give your perfume some staying power:

 1. Moisturize.

Scent clings better to oily skin, so for those with drier skin, opt for a perfume in cream form, or use an unscented lotion on damp skin before spraying it on.

2. Apply to pulse points.

Perfume is activated by body heat. Pulse points located on your wrist are warm because of close the blood pumps near the skin’s surface, therefore making an ideal area to apply perfume. Other warm points on your body include behind the ears, at the bottom of the throat, the inside of the elbow, and behind the knees.

3. Never rub.

Some people feel the need to “rub” perfume into their skin, in an attempt to warm the skin and spread the scent. Unfortunately, this only breaks down the perfume’s structure, ultimately weakening the scent.

4. Store properly.

Heat, light, and humidity can all break down the compounds in a perfume, causing it to become less fragrant. To keep scent strong and unaltered, store your bottle in a cool place, away from direct sunlight, and ideally out of the bathroom, as the heat and humidity from showers and baths could damage it greatly.

5. Experiment.

Look beyond traditional applications — like your pulse points, wrists, and neck — and dare to create a wider sensorial experience.

Spritz on your clothes, scarf, hair tie, pillow, yoga mat, stationary, gifts. For instance, our 1809 Surf scent works great in hair, on your bathing suit or a beach towel. The Camp fragrance can keep your woodsy vibe going on your pillow, jacket, sleeping bag. And meditation pillows, yoga mats and workout clothes make a perfect accompaniment for Zen.

I love to spray three or four spritz’s into my closet and onto my clothes about once a week, it makes my clothes smell so good, and I find the smell last longer on me whenever I do this, then I spray my self. I love ma petite cherie by Annick Goutal. Super over priced, but it smells like green apple :)

Florence by Tocca has been my signature scent for the past three years. I absolutely LOVE it! I have tried to find another scent to move on to, but nothing compares.

I spray perfume on my hair while it’s still damp. I usually flip my head upside down and spray it on the underside of my hair, close to the base of my hairline. It’s such an easy trick that leaves my hair smelling amazing for hours and hours!

I don’t have a signature scent – I wear perfume based on how I feel that day and I sometimes collect perfume based on how much I love the bottle! No matter what, my fragrances MUST be cruelty-free. I won’t buy a perfume that was tested on animals. I have a lot of LUSH Cosmetics Gorilla Perfumes, and they are by far my favourite. If I had to pick a signature, it’d be LUSH Cosmetics’ limited edition American Cream perfume – the same scent as my favourite conditioner.

Also, spray the ankles, it’s a subtle way to introduce yourself before you enter the room. :) And keep your perfume in a cool place.

Clarins Sunshine is a great scent for summer (I wear it all year round!) as it doesn’t attract bees. The matching lotion also has serotonin in it!

My Momma taught me many years ago how to wear perfume. (She loved to keep up with fashion magazines and the ladies–Marilyn Monroe, Katherine Hepburn, etc.) I have people tell me that I always smell nice. My skin is dry so I use Coconut Oil after showering on my still damp skin. Then I lightly towel dry. The oil doesn’t really leave a scent so my Juicy Couture stays all day with me, even after work. I do spritz some under my arms too as I use natural products for deodorant. And sometimes, for a little more added effect, a slight mist in the air just above my hair–not too much though–just a hint.

I love perfume. My all time favorite scents are Miss Dior Cherie and Chloe. Such timeless, feminine scents.

Hi there,
Great article! A couple of things though:
1) Don’t put perfume behind your ears because often it is exudes a funky scent that can wreak havoc with your expensive fragrance. Put it under your ears on your neck for the pulse pointt or into your hairline at the back of your neck, every time you flick your hair you will waft.
2) The Moisturiser tip is excellent. You can also use a non perfumed moisturiser and squirt in some perfume before you apply, this gives a beautiful, slow release wash of fragrance from a whole arm or decolletage.
3) Another great way to give your skin good fragrance stickability is two drops of olive oil in your bath, it feeds and moisturises, and also gives a good grab for fragrance.
I hope this helps,

I’m gonna keep in mind your pointers here, bella! It’s also my problem with my current perfume. And I’m quite reluctant to spend so much money for the more expensive ones. All the other comments are also of much help. Thanks!

another trick:

if your perfume comes in a spray bottle, also spray it on your hair (as if you “create” a bridge with it and then you just “walk” under it) and then comb your hair with your hands so it arrives to everywhere. if the perfume doesn’t come in a spray bottle, put some in your hands, rub them and just touch the ends of your hair).

I know that to “rub” the perfume breaks the molecules, but in that case you put perfume ON your body (the places you say are the ones I already know, except the knees one) but this is just for a “plus”, and your hair keeps the scent better than your skin and whenever you walk, your scent goes behind you :)

Another trick if you don’t want your perfume to conflict with “other” people…spritz (most if not all perfumes come in spritz bottles) in front of you, and walk through!!!

Great tips!!! I love wearing Poivre Samarcande ->> and will definitely be using these tricks! I also loved the comment about putting some into your hair (my husband will love that!).

Oil based perfumes last longer than alcohol based perfumes! Always a great secret to know when looking for your next signature scent!

Applying to the inside of the elbows ABSOLUTELY works. It’s better than the wrists. It also helps to get some on your clothes, some perfume clings to fabric better than skin.

Great tips! You can apply perfume to your ankles too. :) I’ve tried hundreds upon hundreds of fragrances looking for my signature and I’ll share a couple of the best perfumes I’ve ever tried. If you’re into vanilla fragrances, the absolute Holy Grail of vanilla scents is Vanigila Del Madagascar. Expensive, but worth every penny! If you like more mysterious incense-y yet sweet scents, Onyx perfume oil by Sage is amazing! Great price for all of the fragrances by Sage.

I read an article that suggested storing perfume in the refrigerator to extend the life, haven’t tried it but I’m interested if that would work or not.

If you dab a little Vaseline (petroleum jelly) on the inside of your wrist or elbow, then rub your perfume into that, it will last longer than 24 hours. I usually have to wash it off before bed or it bothers me while I sleep cause its too strong. Totally works, everyone knows my signature scent :)
