Monday Quote: You Are The Entire Ocean

“You are not a drop in the ocean. You are the entire ocean in a drop.”

– Rumi

This is one of those quotes that I saw on Pinterest and it made me stop and think.  I never really thought about it this way, but it’s such a lovely perspective.  We always think of ourselves as being so small in the grand scheme of things…just one tiny drop in the vast expanse of the ocean.  It’s nice to think about it this way…all of our experiences, travels, people we meet, are in our hearts and souls. We carry our world inside of us, each and every one of us does, making us all like the entire ocean in a drop.

Love Rumi’s love poetry…

As far as I can tell, Rumi never said that. Someone made up their own quote and put his name on it, probably inspired by his poem, “A Garden Beyond Paradise.” The actual quote is,
“Let the drop of water that is you become a hundred mighty seas.
But do not think that the drop alone
becomes the Ocean— the Ocean, too, becomes the drop!

It really is sad to me to see a great poet’s work be bastardized and then blindly re-posted a zillion times.

This is how I personally interpret the quote:
“You are not a drop in the ocean” = You are not insignificant
“You are the entire ocean in a drop” = You are significant and connected to the universal energy

But Alan Watt’s approach is more appealing to me
Because he gives me a good suggestion
Offer a game of life
This is like a fun children’s play
In which there is neither a winner nor a loser
And this game worked
I am a thirsty pilgrim for the rain of truth ………
