Guest Post: London Fashion Week Street Style

This guest post is from our UK guest blogger, Julia of Stylonylon!

Shooting street style has been a real revelation to me. Hitting Somerset House – the epicenter of London Fashion Week – to watch the parade and become part of it has become one of my favourite fashion week experiences. It’s the perfect symbiotic relationship – the sartorially exquisite and indulgent arrive, on the whole, with the modest expectation of adding a splash of colour and styling to the pale stone backdrop. Photographers watchfully look for the outfit or detail that speaks to them before capturing for fashion’s transient posterity.

I’ve learnt that a smile and a look for ascent before photographing an outfit goes a long way and also cements the relationship between photographer and subject. Yes, it can feel a bit overwhelming at times, and yes, the desperate showboaters do stick out like a sore thumb but, for me, they’re all part of it. But this time round it felt less like a circus and more like a relaxed, if perfectly styled and mud-free, festival – perhaps that Suzy Menkes article hit home harder than we thought.

The main trends that stood out to me were wide-brimmed and floppy hats, head to toe black, cute headgear including turbans and bows, glittery lips, bright blue denim and classic black leather jackets. Killer heels aside, the footwear of choice seemed to be brogues and Van-style slip-ons. Also on display, but in single numbers (sigh of relief!) were blogger failsafes, the snapback and neon beanie. I hope you enjoy the photographs and get a flavour of London’s street style this fashion week!
