Wolf Alice At Fistral Beach

If you’ve never heard of the band Wolf Alice, listen up. On one of the final nights of the Free People Cornwall Road Trip, we were lucky enough to have these guys drive in from London and play our event at the Fistral Beach Bar.

Wolf Alice is made up of three dudes ( Joff, Joel and Theo) and one lovely lady (Ellie). Ellie has a look that really reminds me of Alexa Chung — she’s got that effortlessly beautiful and cool vibe down pat. Her melodic vocals over top of guitar riffs give a sound that is part indie, part grunge and maybe even part dance. Whatever you want to call it, Wolf Alice is point blank awesome.

I got to interview Wolf Alice before their set, which really just turned into a hilarious conversation over a few beers…

How did you guys meet and form the band?

Theo: In ice skating competitions. That’s how these two (Ellie and Joff) met. Like in Mighty Ducks.

Joff: We were quite bad.

Theo: Like a shit Mighty Ducks.

Ellie: We came last in our final competition so we were like, “Right, let’s do something else…”

Describe your musical style in 3 words:

Theo: “Average at best”.

Joel: That’s a fair assumption. That’s the comment we always hear the most!

How did you get the name ‘Wolf Alice’?

Joel: Their (Ellie and Joff’s) nicknames from when they were ice skaters were ‘Wolf’ and ‘Alice’, and I was the cleaner at the ice rink!

Who are your biggest musical influences?

Ellie: When I’m writing a song and I think, “What would they do?” I’m thinking about Brian Jonestown Massacre, Nirvana, Pixies…

Joel: …and Slade!

Where do you guys see yourselves in 5 years time?

Theo: (Points to the ocean) On a boat over there. A really big boat and Joff’s in a smaller, less impressive boat.

What’s your favourite part about performing?

Joff: The end of it! No, I do kind of like the buzz before you go on. That’s quite fun if it’s a big one.

Joel: Certain points in certain songs that I wait for and when they come I’m just like, “Yeeeah!”

Theo: Sometimes you do end up having a rowdy crowd, but when you see them start to move, that’s quite cool.

Describe your personal style:

Joel: Must try harder.

Ellie: I don’t really have a personal style. I’m yet to decide who I am!

I’m really looking forward to hearing more from these guys in the future. Hopefully they can make it over to the states to play a show or two! Getting to know them was good fun.

I have a confession to make. I’m not a huge fan of a lot of the bands posted on here…but these guys are pretty awesome. Love their vibe and that song!
