Local Gem: Soy Cafe

On a main street in Philly’s Northern Liberties neighborhood is a quiet café that has my heart: Soy Café. It’s one of those places where you walk in for the first time and immediately feel like you’ve been there before. Like the home of an old friend. It’s comfortable. Bursting with shape and color left and right, the décor is an eclectic mix of new and vintage furniture and wall art made by local artists. There’s a small area where you can buy little creations from local artists, as well – like pressed-flower cards and handmade jewelry. I love the idea of local businesses supporting other local businesses — so sweet.

There are three different spaces to sit, each with a different feel: the main section – brightly lit, filled with art, and more lively; the back room – a darker space with sleek, modern furniture and an individual light on every table; and the backyard – my favorite. The backyard is modest, and in the best way. Just a few small wooden tables and chairs, a bench, some plants scattered about, and a brick wall covered in ivy. I’m a sucker for ivy walls. You could spend hours back there laughing with a friend, messing around on your laptop (enjoying that free wifi), or hanging out with your pup. And you do.

But let’s not forget the food. It’s delicious. There’s a well-rounded list with everything from mushroom miso soup to veggie omelettes to soy ice cream. Their soy milk is homemade, as are all of their baked goods, and the menu is overflowing with vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options. All delicious. I’m partial to the the avocado grapefruit salad with toasted almond chips – light and tasty. That with a fresh cucumber/kale/apple smoothie and I’m totally set.

If you’re ever in the area, stop by Soy Café. Just being there is a treat in itself. :)
