Guest Post: Sage Erickson In Lisbon, Portugal

This guest post comes from professional surfer Sage Erickson!

The final stop on this year’s ASP Women’s Championship Tour brought me to one of the oldest cities in the world – Lisbon, Portugal.  I’ve traveled to Portugal in the past to surf, but I never really checked out Lisbon.  This trip, however, I decided to leave the beautiful beaches of Cascias behind and explore Lisbon.

It’s impossible not to feel the history of Lisbon while meandering through its cavernously narrow streets.  It feels as if every cobblestone, doorway, and building has a story to tell.  One can only imagine would it was like to walk these streets hundreds of years ago.

While Lisbon’s history is ever present, it doesn’t overshadow its beauty.  Buildings washed in hues of red, blue and yellow dot the cityscape and provide a sense of warmth.  The mix of ancient and modern architecture create an extraordinarily vibrant and exciting atmosphere.  I’ve traveled all over the world and have never been in a city so unique.

When I arrive in a new city, my most frequent Google searches are “where are the best waves” and “vintage stores”… but not necessarily in that order.  Much to my delight, Lisbon offered plenty of opportunities to satiate my appetite for vintage.  You can never go wrong buying vintage, especially vintage from overseas.  You’ll never run into anyone back in the states wearing the same thing and, more importantly, the article was conceptualized and created by an entirely different culture.  My favorite shop was As De Espadas-Vintage Store and More where I picked up the holy grail of hats – green suede, Indiana Jones-esque hat from the 50’s.   It goes with everything in my wardrobe and, even if it doesn’t, I can’t won’t take it off.  Bring your GPS because finding As De Espadas-Vintage Store and More is reserved for the locals.

My time exploring Lisbon was a dream and I wish I could have stayed a bit longer.  However, there was a surf contest to win.  So, with vintage hat on head, I made my way back to the sleepy fishing town of Cascias.

Adeus, Lisbon.  Ate a vista!
