West Coast Winter Dresses

Here on the west coast, our winter is mild. We become frigid little beings at a mere 35 degrees… a surely welcomed temperature for those of you braving the Midwest and beyond. We do have to layer, yes… but our layers are a bit lighter and more forgiving. Down parkas and ear muffs aren’t a necessity, though we do love escaping somewhere/anywhere they are (grass is always greener syndrome?). Here I took of my favorite Free People dresses and layered them appropriately for a current California December.

I’ll always love denim on denim. Canadian tuxedo or not… it will be a combo that will forever hold my heart. I paired my beloved Bow & Arrow Henley Dress with a vintage pair of Levi’s and denim trench, along with an old pair of vintage men’s kicker boots that I live in during these cold months. I love this dress as it doubles as a tunic top, and I throw it on with everything. The thicker material adds a bit of insulation, and the print can be paired with just about any ensemble.

The Skyfall Embroidered Dress is another winter dress in heavy rotation. Paired with vegan leather skinnies, a big chunky scarf, and my favorite ankle boots, this is my go-to outfit for work and everyday running around. Colder days I’ll put a tight close layer underneath for warmth. Come evening, I throw on a pair of tights and chunky heels, a little lip stain… and viola, done. Ready in but a minute…

This last look is pretty seasonless, but it still manages to keep me cozy in Northern California. As long as I have thick tights and socks, a good hat and layers both over and under this lovely sheer maxi dress… I’m good to go. Easy, loose, flowy… all things that are a must. I’m personally a big fan of shapeless dressing… though my lovely man would love to change my mind on this matter.

Yes, layering is key for the cold. I live in the Catskill Mtns (NY) and it is bitterly cold here. It is all about the layers…I love having fun with layering pieces which would be considered summery into a fall/winter look. For me loose fitting is a must and it has to be a quick easy pull together look, flowy pieces under thick tunic sweaters with tights or ripped jeans, leg warmers, boots, and a beanie is a must. I wear a ridiculous amount of layers but it is so much fun — I do not care what people in my small lil’ village think about me as I walk down main street in my FP get ups!

Don’t forget that Washington and Oregon are part of the West Coast too! I think I’d freeze in an outfit like that (no matter how lovely), especially with the 19 degree weather we’ve been having here in the San Juan islands lately. Brrrr.

You are so right about northern California winters! Essentials being thick leggings, boots, and a warm hat… and a sweatshirt! You are a *total* babe in these pictures!! Really, though…kudos for the awesome fashion post.

I love all these outfit. Unfortunately the temperatures on the East Coast of England require about five layers constantly, including when i’m inside my freezing student house :( Definitely going to try out these looks in spring though :)

Beautiful, I love the second outfit that coat and those sunglasses together are pure poetry. I LOVE that hat in the first outfit, I’ve been looking for a wider flat brim fedora forever, any chance you remember where you bought it?
