Every weekend, my Love and I try and get up with the sunrise on Sunday morning… jump on the bike (if weather permits) or in the VW bus… and find a little nook in a coffee shop. A nook where we can read the paper (I know… people do, in fact, still do this by hand), sip on a hot drink, play a game of chess or dominoes, and watch the sun greet the day. We live in Sonoma, where little nooks are everywhere, but none quite like Aquatica. Café Aquatica sits on the cliffs of Highway 1 in Jenner, California. A small tiny town (population: 136… yes, as in one hundred thirty-six) that will pass by if you dare blink (most great things do… don’t they?).
Something about this place… the subtle reminders hand painted on the walls: “be kind,” “friendship,” “love”…the crashing waves of the northern pacific coast line, the perfect hue of blue. Most of all, the coffee IS the best I have had… and their food is even better. The baked goods? No words. I’ve stayed for hours before (no, they don’t have WiFi and I would never bring a computer in here) reading and writing… watching the locals come in and catch up over their morning cup. A great way to catch up on Charlie’s life, even if you’ve never met him before.
If you ever find yourself in Northern California… make a stop here. Sit for a while. Take out a pen. You will be…happy. Other favorite nooks in Northern California I should find? I would greatly appreciate your input… always on the hunt. Much love to all of you and yours.
OMG! Take me there NOW!!!!

I live in northern Cali and I’m thinking I need to visit this adorable little place!!! Sooo cute!
I’m originally from outside of Calistoga and so happy to see my county here on the blog! Makes me miss home, since I’m living in Chicago now. I love this cafe! My sister used to live up the coast from Jenner and whenever I’d drive out to see her I’d stop there and watch the river meet the sea. My father and I saw a whale in the bay at the River’s End Inn, about a quarter mile down the road! Another great place, not too far from there, is wild flour bakery in freestone (http://www.wildflourbread.com/). you need to go! its pretty close to highway one, between bodega and sebastapol. its got kind of weird hours but is 100% worth the trip! their breads, scones and sticky buns are all so good, and their whole attitude matches the loveliness of the food. There is a great garden out back that is verdant and lush in the spring and summer, with benches to eat your delicious treats. Go (i wish i could)!
Originally from Sonoma County, now living in Arizona and this makes me miss home, where my heart still lives……
This place looks so amazing! I must go there now!! No wifi, only book reading, chatting with locals and just pure hanging out, sounds pretty amazing to me!! I love the internet, don’t get me wrong…but I sure do miss the days without it sometimes.
