Monday Quote: Embrace Imperfection

Embrace imperfection.

One of our dear customers sent in this drawing of a dragonfly. Haley Brown, a high school senior from Minnesota, wrote to Free People about how it’s important to embrace your imperfection, throughout life and in design. The imperfect dragonfly symbolizes the defeat of self-created illusions—essentially overcoming self-created obstacles.

Her drawing is overlayed on top of an image of the Northern California coast. Nature causes an uneven edge where the water meets the Earth, leaving all coastlines imperfect, but yet so beautiful.

Our imperfections are a part of who we are, and it’s important to embrace that. We were touched by what Haley had to say, and wanted to share her drawing on the blog with you all! Read below to get to know a little bit more about Haley.

Where are you from?

I am a senior at Bethlehem Academy in Faribault, MN (Godforsaken Iceland).

What inspires you the most?

I would have to say my own goals. I have always been propelled by my aspirations and ambitions.

How do you embrace imperfection?

I haven’t always accepted my faults; it has taken some time, but after some self-examination, I found some perfection hidden in my imperfections. Acknowledging that you are different from everyone else is essential to your happiness.

What does being free mean to you?

Being an individual who is “free” not only physically, but mentally. Anyone can be an individual, but to be free mentally, you have to have confidence in yourself and what you believe.

I love a good perspective on things, esp from a young girl. Accepting yourself as you are and loving yourself is SO important. There are people who you want to love you who won’t. But if you feel you have worth regardless of what others think, you won’t get dragged into bad relationships. This doesn’t mean that we’re all perfect, just that we should love ourselves even when we know we need to keep improving.
