FP Me User We Love: Lindsay Pierson

I can’t think of a better FP Me user to feature this week than Lindsay Pierson. It’s one thing to have great style pics, but when you have great style and somehow find a way to incorporate your hobby…that’s a whole different story.

When I came across Lindsay’s FP Me pics, I was in awe. She has great style, an eye for location, and incorporates her passion for ballet into her pictures. She also happens to work at the Free People Bellevue store!  With the re-launch of FP Movement this week, I really wanted to share her inspiring pictures with you all. She teamed up with Nikki Cloud who shot the pictures below, and the results were pretty amazing. Take a look, and step into the graceful world of Lindsay Pierson!

Where are you from?

I am from a little town called Jackson, TN.  Currently I live in Seattle, WA.

How old were you when you first started practicing ballet? What inspired you to start?

I was 6 when I started dancing. My mom took me to the studio to sign me up for classes and I got to peek in on the older girls doing pointe, I was immediately in love and have been hooked ever since.

Have you ever tried other styles of dance?

I trained mostly in classical ballet as a kid, but as I got older I started trying more things.  When I was 18 I joined a company that did every style you can think of.  It was hard for me initially to get out of my “ballet box,” but now I love taking contemporary or jazz classes, maybe even the occasional hip-hop. ;)

What is your favorite thing about ballet?

My favorite thing about dancing ballet is that it makes me feel beautiful.  As dancers I think we can often be pretty self deprecating, but hey, that’s not just a dancer quality – it’s a human quality, and finding a style of movement that sits well in your body is one of the best feelings.  I think when everything else in life is constantly changing, it’s nice to know I can get in the studio and still be the same me.

What are three words that describe your personal style?

Classic and detailed, but laid-back.

Does ballet inspire your personal style?

Absolutely! I wear a lot of layers and things that I can typically move in. The more flowy it is, the better! I also pull a lot of inspiration from the details and color stories that remind me of ballet:  Soft, muted colors. A necklace detail. Long, slimming lines.  You will rarely see me in bright neon colors.  Ballet is elegant and timeless, and I try to add pieces to my wardrobe that imitate that.

What is a typical outfit you would wear when you dance?

Layers, layers, layers! I usually start with a leotard and go from there, adding either tights or leggings, a wrap skirt, a loose fitting t-shirt and a sweater for warmth. My last layer is always leg warmers :) I am obsessed.  Sometimes I even wear two pairs!

Describe a day in the life of Lindsay Pierson.

I can’t start my day without coffee.  That’s the first thing I do when I get up. Other than that, every day is pretty different from the next. I wear a lot of different “hats” during the week which makes for an exciting life. In one week I get to be a performer, a dance teacher, a choreographer, a stylist, a visual MIT, and a photographer. To give you an example, my Mondays are crazy! Typically I’ll work at the store in the morning and then drive straight to the dance studio. While I don’t suggest putting on a pair of tights while driving down the freeway, it may or may not be a talent I’ve mastered! Then I get to go home for a late dinner and a hang out with my dog.  I feel very blessed in the fact that I’ve somehow found a way to fit all of my passions into one busy but fulfilling life.

Ballerinas have incredible bodies…do you have a strict workout routine or diet that you follow?

I try to do something active everyday. I take vitamins and try to eat healthy, giving my body the nutrients it needs. That being said, you can almost always find a pint of Ben and Jerry’s “half-baked” in my freezer.  Balance is key to keeping a happy life!

Do you have any helpful tips on staying fit and healthy?

Protein and fiber are really good things to remember in your diet. They give you lasting energy on long days.  An easy snack to take with you is apples and peanut butter, or a spinach tortilla wrap with turkey, veggies and hummus inside. When you’re active your body craves quick fixes like sugars and fats, and these snacks are a great way to keep you full for a longer period of time while still giving your body the energy it needs.

What are your thoughts on Free People’s Movement launch, which will be featuring a lot of products focused around dance and ballet?

I have had a hard time finding things to wear when I’m dancing that match my day to day style.  I have always wanted to match my love of dance with with my love of style. I often find myself taking clothing not meant for dancing and adding my own touch to it so that I can still be stylish when I’m in my dancing attire. I’m excited to be able to pick up an article MEANT to be moved in that also exudes a love for fashion and style.

What is your favorite kind of music? Any certain songs that you are really into right now?

My taste in music varies from Indie Singer/Songwriter and Folk to Electronic and R&B.  I tend to get really hooked on full albums and I listen to them until I know every song!  Right now some of the artists and albums I’m into are: The Saint Johns – Open Water, Kodaline – In a Perfect World, Ingrid Michaelson – Lights Out, Foster the People – Supermodel, and I am anxiously awaiting Sam Smith’s upcoming album!

Who/what inspires you the most?

I am so inspired by words.  Whether they are quotes, lyrics, poems, or conversations with people, I’m fascinated by the ability to paint a picture or a thought through words. I have journals full of not my own thoughts but of the thoughts of other people.  Sometimes you can’t put into words exactly what you’re trying to convey and I am inspired by the people who are able to express what I cannot.

What is the best piece of advice you have ever been given?

One of the best pieces of advice I’ve ever been given is to be intentional.  I love this because it has so many applications.  Be intentional when you speak, mean what you say, have a purpose in your speech. Be intentional in your relationships, no matter what kind, expect little, give in abundance. Be intentional in your work. Go out and get what you want.  Be intentional in your dancing, make even the transitions important, tell a story. Give purpose to your life and watch it transform in front of you.

What does being ‘free’ mean to you?

Being free to me is that moment when you go, “Oh yeah, that’s who I really am… And I like it.”

Hooray for ballerinas eating ice cream. Love these pictures. I, however, and not brave enough to wear my pointe shoes outdoors. Good for her.

Where was she when you were casting your full campaign?! THAT’S a dancer: strong, focused, and toned (her back in the first picture is GORGEOUS) but for all that, she makes the movement look effortless. And her words are intelligent and thoughtful. More of this, please.

This is so beautiful. She is stunning and extremely articulate.

See, this is amazing! An actual ballet dancer! You should have gotten this girl to represent your FP Movement Ballet line, because SHE KNOWS WHAT SHE’S DOING! Unbelievable, you missed a great opportunity there.

Natalie

Why, why on earth would you not use her for your ad? That is a real ballet dancer and someone who does the art of ballet justice.

Amanda

I’m echoing what the other girls are saying because the girl you used in your catalog, while beautiful, was not a trained dancer. These images are gorgeous and should have been used instead. These dancers are trained and strong ballerinas. That’s what should be represented in the catalog.

Glad you now realize what a real ballerina looks like!

You need to get new picture for you catalog, and use someone like her!

This makes me wistful. I stopped dancing awhile ago and I miss it horribly.

Wow gorgeous! I agree. Use her and the photographer for the catalogue. I love the one in front of the bridge. Makes me feel so free! xo
