Borrowed From The Boys: How To Mix In Menswear

I think it’s safe to say that we all have a little Lou in us.

This fall we’re excited to embrace our inner tomboy and mix in a little menswear to our looks. Adding in boy elements to an outfit is a perfect way to achieve that ‘cool girl’ look. If you have a boyfriend, you’re in luck. The term “boyfriend jeans” wasn’t coined for no reason – stealing things out of a man’s closet is totally okay in our opinion. From their perfectly broken-in jeans, to the oh-so-soft flannel, to the over-sized button-down that goes with everything, the options are endless. And if you don’t have a man to borrow those things from, we’ve got some great options this season that are just as good as the real thing.

The Button-Down

Get the look:  Washington Coat, Stripe Boyfriend Shirt, 20/20 Denim Skirt, Gibson Slip On Sneaker, Leather Tassel Pendant.

Mix fitted pieces with looser, more masculine add-ons, like this sleek pencil skirt paired with a classic menswear button down, field jacket, and slip on sneakers. Perfect for a weekend farmer’s market or flea market date.

The Baseball Hat

Get the look: Street Smart Pull On Maxi, Plaid Lace Up Button Down, Ravyn Over the Knee Boot, Dorsan Leather Brim Baseball Hat, Curved Iron Hairpiece.

Not just for ball games, baseball hats are big this year, and we couldn’t be happier about it. A leather-brimmed hat is perfect to throw on with a casual maxi dress and over the knee boots, for a super casual look.

The Loafers

Get the look: Merit Loafer Slip On, Convertible Harness Belt, Tryan Collar.

Leather makes everything better, and such is the case for these masculine leather loafers. Add a pair (plus a leather harness) to a feminine dress to instantly toughen it up for a night out.

My petite frame does not bode well for borrowing pieces from my boyfriend’s wardrobe; I would be swimming in most of his clothes. Luckily there is Free People and other brands that make pieces that look borrowed from the men but are made with the ladies in mind.

I feel like fall/winter, more than any other time of the year, is when I start dressing more like a tomboy with my sneakers, various socks and boots combinations, accessories, layers upon layers, jeans, etc.

Stealing loafers from boys is a bit hard when they have so big feet, haha :D But I love the loafer look, it’s great!

Definitely nabbing the button down for a cover up with leggings – & still figuring out how to wear a baseball cap without looking ridiculous. I wish, I wish.

Warm Regards,
