A DIY Wreath for the Holiday Season

I’ve always loved the lead-up to the holidays. From late-October onward, the flavors, colors, and scents of the season never fail to delight.

But I tend to shy away from pre-made decorations, perhaps a holdover from a childhood filled with crafts and handmade projects, I’d much rather adorn my mantle or tree with painted pine cones and a garland of cranberries. As nature undergoes her wintery transformation, it’s the perfect time to incorporate a natural relic or two in your own holiday decor, and today I’m sharing one of my favorite ways to do just that.

Hung on your door or displayed on the wall, this autumnal wreath gathers together the incredible colors of late fall. I chose to incorporate a few sprigs of colorful eucalyptus, which mirrors the fall foliage and smells incredible, but you could use any greenery that happens to catch your eye at the market. See all the steps below, and be sure to let us know in the comments which holiday project you’d like to see us to tackle next!

Materials:
3 types of flowers & greenery (look for hearty stems that will dry nicely)
Grapevine wreath or garland
Scissors
Wire snips
Florist’s wire

For the base, you can choose to either purchase a pre-made grapevine wreath or a garland to make your own. I chose to make my own so I could customize the size and shape, and so it would be easier to slip the flower stems between the branches.

Unwind the grapevine and create a circle with it the size you’d like your wreath to be. Then wind the vine around itself until it’s completely wrapped. It should feel secure, but if it’s not, cut a piece of wire to wrap around the loose end.

Choose your base flower — hearty greenery works best for this — you’ll want enough to cover the entire circumference of the wreath. Trim each stem to about 6″ long, snipping off any leaves at the end. Spear the end of each stem through the grape vine at a slight angle. Repeat, overlapping slightly, until the entire front of the wreath is covered.

Using a lighter hand, repeat this step with the eucalyptus, being careful not to break the stems.

Finally, add sprigs of the lightest flower you’ve selected all around the wreath. Be sure not to add too much, especially if you’re using baby’s breath as I did, as it easily overwhelms. If any of the stems feel loose, use the wire to secure them.

This is beautiful! My mom always put a wreath on our front door and this looks like her taste. This would be a fun thing for us to do together :) – maybe get her the supplies and gift an afternoon of us crafting!

Warm Regards,

Beautiful. I’m the opposite and tend to shy away from DIYs because they’re too complicated for me (i.e., I’m impatient) but this one looks easy.
Great tutorial!
