Art-itecture: The World Of Miami Art Deco

When I think of Miami, I think of white sandy beaches, palm trees, and bikinis. But one of my favorite things about the city is the Art Deco-inspired architecture. Art-itecture, if you will! So, when I flew from snowy New York City to spend a week in the sun, I had bright colors, pink sidewalks, and Art Deco on the mind. I couldn’t wait to tour the city, referred to as the “American Riviera” by some.  The majority of these pastel buildings were built between 1923 and 1943 and served as hangouts for Hollywood stars such as Clark Gable and Rita Hayworth… I can almost imagine seeing Rita kicking back on a hotel porch, martini in hand. My imagination ran wild with each building I discovered, thinking about what Miami Beach may have been like back in the 1930’s with these gorgeous Art Deco hotels sitting so pretty against the long coast line. As I walked up and down Ocean Drive, I weaved in and out of alleyways, trying to catch a glimpse of a hidden ‘Deco detail. The font used on buildings is inspiration alone. The Art Deco District of South Beach is one of my favorite pieces of land in the country. Really! Whenever I visit, I feel like I am in a pocket of the world that is still a little hidden, but exploding with playfulness and charm. I love to let my imagination wander as I allow the history of South Beach to wash over me. I hope you enjoy these photos as much as I loved taking them.
