FP Me Stylist Of The Week: MelDenisse

Mel is one of those girls on FP Me who’s striking presence has caught our attention time and time again.

Her soft and delicate style set against the serene backdrop of nature initially brought our eye to her profile, and we thought it was about time we featured this Nashville-raised, now California local on the blog. She likes to touch on all things creative, from styling, to photography, to calligraphy, and whether she’s suited up in a dress to reveal her girly side, or keeping it casual in relaxed knits, this girl can switch up her style while still remaining true to herself. Read below to find out a little bit more about this inspirational girl!

“I saw what the world in my heart looked like, and I let it blossom out.”

Where do you currently live and how do you think your city shapes your lifestyle?

I moved to Redding, CA a little over a year ago. It was a stretch to move from a city like Nashville because it’s comparatively a lot smaller. I thought I was just moving to finish writing my book, but it was about so much more. I’ve met some of my best friends here, not to mention my husband. I love that we’re surrounded by wildlife, forests, and mountains, so it’s been full of adventure and exploration. I love to go to the nearby mountains (Mount Shasta and Mount Lassen) and get lost for hours. With writing and photography, it’s a dream to be in a scenic place such as this! It offers endless inspiration.

What do you think is the best kept secret within your city?

Our town has only 90,000 people, but over 40 countries are represented. This diversity creates an interesting energy in a multi-ethnic sense of style. It’s thriving with young people who’ve built such an amazing community. You never know what’s going to happen next.

Another perk is that we’re so central to a lot of amazing spots like Portland, Napa Valley, San Francisco, Lake Tahoe, and so much more! It feels like a retreat during the week, then I can pack my bags and take a weekend trip.

How do you think your personality reflects your personal style?

My personality is reclusive, mysterious, dark, but with a sweet accessibility. When that crosses over into my style, it plays out in a moody, eerie, yet approachable way. I love styles inspired from the Victorian era, which is why I’ve grown a love for FP and their tendency to create pieces like that. When I take photos, I love to seek landscapes that strike a haunting kind of beauty. My personality always envisions these beautiful, otherworldly places and I love going out and making them real through fashion, photos, and writing.

You seem to be a creator of all things beautiful. From writing to photography to styling, where do you think your innate creativity stems from?

Life itself. I choose to be in awe of something every day. I choose to be inspired. I choose to grow in the things I love. When I talk about beauty and displaying it, it’s something I learned to carry on the inside first. Since I’m a visual person, I’ll say it like this: I saw what the world in my heart looked like, and I let it blossom out. I am always getting deeper acquainted with the fragrance of it.

What inspired you to start your blog?

Blogging seems to be like breathing air. I wanted to have a place to share all the facets of my artistic exploration like: writing, photography, and newly added calligraphy. I’d like for it all to encourage, inspire, or spark this “living in beauty” theme for others as well.

What do you think makes for a perfect picture?

Vulnerability. Confidence. Patience. Take a photo through the emotions that want to spill out. Explore them. Let them ooze out. Make mistakes! Sometimes, I’m not sure what I’m looking for in a photo until hundreds are snapped, and I begin to see a pattern in them. I find that one photo that says it all. I find the one thing I was communicating all along. In my mind, a perfect picture is when you’ve succeeded in telling a story.

Can you give us a little example of what a day in the life of Mel looks like?

Since I “work” from home, it’s a lot of spontaneous creativity. First things first: running out to grab some coffee is always a must! Then I head back to my little home office and switch between a myriad of tasks. I’m currently finishing my first book and I manage my online shop where I sell handmade devotional card packs. When I’m working on those, I usually find myself laying on the floor surrounded by piles of paper, string, and wax seals. On the more spontaneous days, I reserve to simply rest– go out and venture to a new spot and take my camera with me too. I end my days by attempting to cook something new and spending quality time with my husband and friends.

If you could only wear three Free People items for the next year what would they be and why?

Toughest question ever ;) But alas, if I were to choose three things, they would be:

1. Sunset Park Thermal – You know that feeling on a cold day sitting by the fireplace wrapped in your favorite throw? It’s like that, but on the go– whether I’m working, running errands, or roaming some forest.

2. FP One Amelie Dress – When I imagine myself in a fairy tale, this is the dress I’d be wearing. And when I come back to reality, it’s still on.

3. Joe Lace Up boots – Do these come off? I had no idea! Not only do they compliment every outfit, but every mood. I love that these boots have taken me to places I never thought I’d be and I can’t wait to see where they take me next.

What does being ‘free’ mean to you?

Being free to me looks like a person who loves themselves well. To be who you are and love it, grow in it, and admire it! It looks like forgiveness– a wonderful gift that lifts a soul. The ability to express femininity and womanhood in an empowering way. The value for adventure. Being in love. Making mistakes. Learning to love the current process. To always see the possibility of something.
