Steamy Superfood Holiday Drink Recipe

I love to ease the harshness of the cold weather through the use of homemade, delicious warm drinks that soothe the mind, body and soul. Right now is a beautiful time of year to experiment with spices and extracts and powders to come up with your own unique drink blend for the holidays.

I recently took three of my favorite superfoods – almonds, hempseeds, and maca powder – and combined them with a mixture of aromatic spices and extracts to create a delicious powerhouse of a drink that calms, warms, energizes and uplifts all at once. It’s also vegan and free of dairy and sugar. What would you add to yours?

Steamy Superfood Holiday Drink

Ingredients (serves 2):

2 cups homemade almond milk (learn to make it here!)

1/3 cup raw hempseeds

1 teaspoon maca powder

½ teaspoon ground cinnamon

¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg

¼ teaspoon ground allspice

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

½ teaspoon peppermint extract

1 pinch organic stevia

To make, simply mix the ingredients together, then place on stovetop and heat on medium until desired temperature is reached. I like to then give everything a few quick pulses in the blender – this creates a smoother texture and makes the hempseeds a little easier to digest*. Top with raw hempseeds and a pinch of cinnamon.

Make this drink at your next holiday gathering, and I guarantee your guests will be begging for the recipe. Another idea: Mix it into your morning oatmeal for a holiday breakfast delight.

Here are some more warm drinks we love: vegan Mexican hot chocolate / homemade masala chai / vegan superfood hot chocolate / sun tonic & moon tonic / golden milk / healthy pumpkin spice latte

Happy holiday season, beauties!

*Hempseeds are actually one of the most easily digestible types of seeds, but I try to do all I can to give my digestive system an easier time!

this looks so incredibly delicious, and it includes two of my favorite ingredients – cinnamon & vanilla! This just might entice me into the unknown territory of the kitchen; I love to try it out! Thank you for sharing!

Yum! For awhile now I’ve been drinking a cup of “golden milk” daily, which is a drink popular in India with the key ingredient being the highly beneficial turmeric. Here’s the recipe I use if interested http://www.healthy-holistic-living.com/golden-milk.html# (I also like to throw in some cinnamon, ginger, and vanilla.) It’s good on its own but lately I’ve been adding a tablespoon of cacoa powder plus a bit more honey to the mix making a delicious and healthy hot chocolate. :)

Yum, sounds and looks delicious! Only thing I’m not so sure about is that maca powder. I know it’s super healthy but I just hate the taste of it. But maybe this drink is spicy enough to cover the taste of maca :D I’m definately gonna try this.

Where did you find raw hemp seeds? I am having no such luck, but maybe I overlooked them at Whole Foods.

I just made this! I subbed barley malt powder for the maca; it’s really great! =)

@Elizabeth Rose, check the bulk food section for raw hemp seeds. If you can’t find them at Whole Foods, check for local natural foods stores or co-ops; they should have raw hemp seeds.
