Emily Hope Steps Behind the Lens

Before she launched her photography career, model Emily Hope was busy on the other side of the lens, posing for the likes of famed fashion photographer Mario Testino.

“I know what not to do when it comes to shooting models,” the London-born, New York-based photographer says. “I think I’m a little more sympathetic to them, too. Like, I won’t make them stand around in the freezing rain.”

These days, she’s hard at work trying to become the next Testino, shooting for major publications like the international editions of Harper’s Bazaar, Vanity Fair, and ELLE. Here, Hope talks about how she got her start in the industry, where she’s hanging out when she’s off-duty, and more.

When did you first pick up a camera?

My dad gave me an Olympus OM2 when I was 14. I still use it actually.

I know you got your start assisting Collier Schorr. What’s one of the greatest things you learned from her?

I learned so much from her. I had never looked at an image cerebrally before. She taught me to really think about what I’m doing and why. Why do I like a certain aesthetic?

How would you describe your photography style?

It really varies from quite classic portraits, from influences like Peter Lindbergh, to snapshots like William Eggleston’s.

What was the first big fashion editorial you ever shot?

It wasn’t the biggest, but one of my first was for Attitude Magazine with model Ben Hill. It’s still one of my favorites.

When you aren’t busy shooting, what do you like to do in your time off?

I mainly hang out in the East Village. My favorite restaurant is Café Mogador on St. Marks.

Thank you Emily!

Very neat! I can definitely see how being a model turned photographer would be a huge help in the field.
