Haute Yogi: Meet Sian Gordon

Sian Gordon was born to be a yogi. Her practice began at age 7 with her godfather, yoga legend Alan Finger, and she’s remained in downward dog ever since. Well, not exactly, but you get the picture. Gordon, a lithe blonde with enviable, perma-beach hair, has been running her own yoga studio in New York since 2009. The uber cool Montauk outpost, called Love, A Yoga Space, not only offers Ashtanga, Vinyasa, and Jivamukti classes, but they also have surfing lessons on the bill. We talked to Gordon about how it all began, her secret health elixir, and her favorite FP Movement pieces.

Sian Gordon 1

Your yoga training began quite early. Tell me about how it all began and why you kept with it.

I was really lucky to grow up with parents who were into yoga, meditation and all things metaphysical. I think because I grew up in that world, it wasn’t particularly interesting to me but I kept going to yoga because I knew it was good for me. I think everyone has this experience when they keep showing up, but it’s like something suddenly opens in you and it’s incredibly powerful. That’s when the practice begins.

What inspired you to open your Montauk yoga space?

I moved to Montauk from the city so I could surf every day and be in nature. There was no good yoga out there and I wanted to open the kind of studio that I wanted to practice in. Somewhere beautiful, cool, and most importantly, somewhere with really smart teachers who get it.

How does yoga continue to challenge you?

In every way, really. The more you practice, the more subtle these challenges become. I think eventually you realize that you’re really being challenged by your own ego.

What’s your favorite post-yoga meal or drink?

Tumeric tea—I’m addicted to it. And, predictably, I like my food raw, vegetarian and gluten free.

What are your favorite pieces from the FP Movement line?

I’m obsessed with the bras and the surf leggings. The bras are so pretty, functional and actually stay in place. I really like the surf leggings because I’ve sliced my legs up so many times in the water and I’m all about having a barrier between my skin and my fin.

What’s the greatest thing that yoga has taught you?

Everything changes and therefore, anything is possible.

Thank you Sian!

Aw! I love her thoughts on how yoga challenges her – ego is truly an obstacle in so many parts of life. I adore her tattoos!
