Homemade All-Natural Shaving Cream

Lately I’ve had skin on my mind. It’s like one big sponge, absorbing everything that comes within contact. Isn’t that both terrifying and beautiful? It makes me cringe, thinking of all the years my skin has been drowning in chemicals. In life, we don’t have much control over a lot of things, so we need to put positive efforts into the things we do have control of. When I began switching to all-natural beauty products, the change was a breath of fresh air. I felt cleaner within and my mind has been at peace with the knowledge that I’m making an effort, and I plan on sticking with it.

The skin on my legs is extremely sensitive. It can easily be irritated, prone to razor burn, and when not taken care of properly, simply looks like a butchered mess. Until recently I’d been using plain castile soap in bar form as the lather before shaving my legs. Fail. Fail. Fail. My legs have looked like I shaved them in the dark with an old razor. With warmer weather breezing in, I knew my legs were soon to be showing in shorts and dresses, so I needed to make a change.

The perfect shave for smoother legs has been my focus. So, I decided to create a homemade, all-natural shaving cream to lather up.

Ingredients:

1/3 cup organic coconut oil

1/3 cup 100% organic shea butter

2 tablespoons jojoba oil

2 tablespoons pure liquid castile soap (I swear by Dr. Bronner’s)

5-10 drops essential oil (I chose lavender) *Less if skin is sensitive

Stand mixer or hand-held mixer

Begin by melting shea butter and coconut oil together in a small saucepan over the lowest heat setting on the stove. Stir until fully melted. Add jojoba oil and stir until blended, remove from heat. Pour mixture into a jar or bowl, and place in the fridge. Wait for the mixture to cool and solidify (this took about an hour).

Once your mixture looks like this, and is solid and cold to the touch, remove from the fridge. Transfer from jar to bowl, and begin whipping. I used a stand mixer, but a hand mixer would work great as well. It will take about 3 minutes until the solid form becomes whipped. Add castile soap and whip more until peaks form and mixture is fully combined. Store in an airtight container in a cool, dry place.

Tips for a smoother shave!

  • Use a good quality razor that is easy to clean. Replace razor every 8-10 shaves.
  • Shampoo first, shave last: by saving shaving for last, you are letting the warm water soften your skin, and open up your hair follicles.
  • Lather your legs with a thin coat of the homemade shaving cream. It is full of rich oils, which will absorb into your skin, allowing for a gentle, smooth shave.
  • Shave your legs in the same direction that your hair grows (down, not up). This will prevent ingrown hairs.
  • Rinse well with warm water.
  • Feel free to customize this recipe a bit by adding different essential oils, or trying cocoa butter in place of the shea.

This shaving cream has been working wonders on my skin ever since I gave it a try. The whip adds enough lather to protect my skin from the razor and let it easily glide down my leg, preventing bumps and burn. The oils have made my skin healthy and hydrated.

I’m going to be the stereotypical poster and ask what lens you used for these photos? The turnout was phenomenal… especially the second to last photo! I don’t really have sensitive or dry skin but I think I’ll try this anyway. Might be one of those occasions where your skin is drier than you thought lol.
