It started with my love for the regular shandy, made with beer and lemonade, and escalated from there…Ask any of my friends and they’ll tell you – I love mixing beer with other ingredients. I’ve always preferred beer to liquor or wine, and I’m convinced that come spring and summer there is nothing more refreshing than an ice cold beer cocktail.
Upon moving to Austin I quickly discovered a popular local favorite in Austin Beerworks (you can catch them at our event this Friday!). I’m a sucker for great cans, and their branding is so well done – not to mention the names for their beers: Peacemaker, Pearl-Snap, Fire Eagle and Black Thunder. I recommend either of the first two for this refreshing grapefruit shandy.
The inspiration for this drink came from the traditional Salty Dog. The combination of grapefruit and salt is one of my favorites – the tartness of the grapefruit keeps it from being too sweet, and the salt adds a savory touch. If grapefruit isn’t your thing, substitute lemon or orange juice, and feel free to skip the salt!
Pink Grapefruit Shandy
1 can Peacemaker Anytime Ale or Pearl-Snap Pilsner
Pink grapefruit juice
Pink Himalayan sea salt
For the salt rim, I pressed the top of a glass into half of a grapefruit. You could also pour some of the grapefruit juice onto a plate and dip the glass in that. Pour some sea salt onto a plate, and dip the rim of the glass into it.
Fill the glass with 2/3 beer and 1/3 grapefruit juice, top with ice, and enjoy!
