Meet Joseph The Band

Sometimes music just speaks to you, and it’s hard to put into words why. When I first listened to Joseph, on a recommendation from a friend, their beautifully haunting melodies cut straight through to my bones, sending a chill through my body that raised goosebumps on my skin. Joseph is comprised of three sisters (Natalie, Allison, and Meegan) from the Pacific Northwest, which helps shed some light on their impeccable harmonies. Just as some siblings share their own language (particularly twins, which two of the sisters are), it’s as if theirs is in the form of music, in melodies, verses, and tones. Our paths finally crossed last month during SXSW and I was able to snap a few photos of them and ask them some questions – meet Joseph!

How was your experience at SXSW? What was your favorite moment?

SXSW. Ah me. We were appropriately prepped on how crazy it would be, so the 10am beer and 2am mid-intersection street fights thankfully didn’t come as a surprise. I think my favorite moments were plentiful. Our show at St. David’s gave me tingles. Also, it was cool to be around so many folks like us. It can be lonely traveling and touring all the time but at SXSW there’s such camaraderie knowing (nearly) everyone around you is living the same life. We ran into so many friends! Around every corner! Literally everyone is there and it’s an absurd/wonderful way to hang out.

You guys are touring this spring, is there a particular city you’re most excited to visit?

Yes we’ve been touring in spring! It’s been crazy seeing all the different springtime climates. (85 degree sunny ocean breezes in California to snow on the trees and frozen lakes in Vermont.) I’d say the main highlight is Brooklyn, of course, where our brother and sister-in-law live with their cat Dingus. And also Burlington, VT is the quaintest little place on the water. Chicago is also a favorite because Southport Grocery’s bread pudding pancakes. And Nashville! Oh man. We’ve collected good people in so many places… makes it hard to choose one.

What are some of your most listened to albums when you’re on the road?

I love this question! Here are some favorites in no particular order:

Bahamas – Bahamas is Afie

Shakey Graves – And The War Came

Death Cab For Cutie – Kintsugi

London Grammar – If You Wait

Sir Sly – You Haunt Me

Nick Jonas – Nick Jonas (Lol)

Betty Who – Take Me When You Go

Sylvan Esso – Sylvan Esso

Wye Oak – Shriek

Sales – Sales

Kurt Vile – “Baby’s Arms” & “Blackberry Song”

If you could take the stage with any other artist, who would it be? What would you sing?

Would die to take the stage with Sylvan Esso. But we wouldn’t have to sing… we’d do a choreographed dance to “Could I Be”.

What’s something you hope to do or accomplish career-wise in the next year?

Oh man, career goals! I feel like I’m at the dinner table with our dad writing down our dreams (a real thing that happens). Within the next year we hope to have our second record made! And, more importantly, hope to be asked to tour with Beyoncé.
