I’ve been lucky enough to attend a few different music festivals in my day and I must say…
the fest in the desert is still one of my faves! The last time I was there was back in ’08 when I was very into Radiohead, not really into sunscreen yet, and wore only a swimsuit and cutoffs all weekend. Come to think of it, I don’t even know if I packed shoes! I know, yikes. So this year I was excited to get back out to Indio to experience the festival I had loved so many years before. (I traded my cutoff shorts for ripped boyfriend jeans this year, FYI. My swimsuit stayed in the pool area only.)
At one point this weekend, I took a break and found the perfect spot in the grass to decompress from the constant stimulation. I had been on the move all day; watching shows, shooting photos, experiencing the art… I was ready to chill out for a sec. I took my bag off of my hot shoulders and let my bare feet rest in the cool grass. I could hear the bass coming from a stage off in the distance. It was calming and rhythmic. The sun was starting to fall behind the desert mountains, casting purple rays in the dusty sky. The yellow ferris wheel lights twinkled in the background. I looked around and noticed the undeniable energy. Everywhere around me I saw people laughing, smiling, dancing, moving. Some were walking with linked arms, determined to make it across the grounds before a show started. Others were casually lounging on the grass, sharing stories. It was beautiful and quite romantic. I couldn’t help but smile — my heart felt full. But that’s just the thing about festivals, isn’t it? People from all over the world join together in a shared experience, brought together by music. And at that point I realized, I had fallen in love with this festival all over again.
