A Family Recipe Takes Salsa to the Next Level

I may be biased but I don’t think there is a better condiment than fresh, homemade salsa.

Growing up in California, salsa was a key player in nearly every meal, and I was raised to take it pretty seriously. Spicy, mild, smokey, sweet, red, green… you name it, I’ve tried it. But no one took it more seriously than my dad. He’s been perfecting his recipe for over 15 years — experimenting every week with ingredients, ratios, and custom tastes. There was always a fresh jar of salsa in the fridge growing up — lucky, I know!  So in celebration of Cinco de Mayo today, I’m sharing my dad’s famous salsa recipe. It’s the perfect addition to any dish or just simply scooped up and eaten with tortilla chips. My mouth is watering just thinking about it, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I have!

Ingredients:

10-12 Roma tomatoes, finely chopped

3 jalapeños, chopped (take seeds out for mild salsa)

Juice from 1 lime

1 bunch of cilantro, chopped

1 white onion, chopped

5-6 tomatillos, peeled and chopped

Salt and pepper to taste

Optional: Add black beans and/or corn

Place all ingredients in food processor, blender (on pulse mode) or salsa maker and mix well. I have also manually chopped the ingredients for a thicker salsa, though it is time intensive. Serve with tortilla chips and enjoy!

Salsa was a staple food growing up for me as well!!! We’ve got our own family recipe, I’ll have to make yours and see how it compares! Great topic, I would love it if more of the FP team would post about family traditions like these, especially food. Food is one of the best ways to bring people together
