Get Out, Get Lost

Every summer I make a bucket list.

A mental one (I tend to lose all of the physical lists that I make)… it lives in my mind, and I add to it every time I think of another adventure I want to take. It’s becoming quite long, and I think that’s because I haven’t really gone anywhere yet this season. I’m starting to feel the itch… that little spark inside of me that needs to get out, needs to see the new and the untouched. Maybe it’s a vacation, or even a quick weekend getaway Whatever it is, it needs to happen soon.

I’ve found that I have a hard time at checking off this list of mine. Does anyone else feel me on this?

I want to drive here, I want to camp out there, I want to explore a new space… there’s so much that I want to do, but how do I get myself there? I always feel like there’s not enough time. Last year, I blinked, and it felt like the summer was gone.

A recent trip with some friends to upstate New York adjusted my thoughts, though. I woke up in Brooklyn, spent the afternoon 20 minutes outside of Woodstock, then went to bed in the suburbs of Philly. One day, three places. It’s a good thing I love driving.

I realized just how much you can experience in 24 hours. As I go back through my list, I’d love some advice on how you all plan to tackle your summer wishes.

How are you setting time aside for adventure? Any travel tips? How are you making the most of summer? Please share in the comments below!

I can totally relate to this. I’m constantly craving adventure, especially now after just starting my first adult job. With a 9-5, I have less free time and can’t really take time off so soon. I think the best thing to satisfy my craving is just setting a specific date for bucket list activities and committing ahead of time, otherwise time flies by and before you know it it’s too late. Lately, I’ve been packing Thursday night so that I can leave right right after work. Set a date, pack your bag, and just go!

I, too, made a bucket list this summer. It’s a strange one and I feel I may be in the same situation. Maybe…you can incorporate what you have to do with the things you want to do…I don’t quite know if that will work. But, maybe it’s worth a try. Also, the images in this post are absolutely lovely.

Less is more. I recently took a one month cross-country trip to teach at the Spirit Weavers Gathering, visit friends and family, and gather wild plant medicine. What I learned on this trip was that spending more time in one place meant greater enjoyment, deepened connections, and ultimately more of a sense that my trip was worthwhile. There were many parts of the trip that felt tragically rushed. We’d find ourselves amongst a stand of precious and perfect Yarrow, wanting to luxuriate all afternoon in it’s glow, but instead have to keep on keepin’ on to make it to our next destination in time. The trip was wonderful despite the hurried moments, but it is something I would keep in mind for the future — plan for less, so you can do more. I hope you’ll take a moment to enjoy the full tale of my journey by clicking the link below <3 Perhaps there will be some other gems of travel and adventure wisdom in there for you. Have a wonderful Summer Season Jana!

So I started a comment earlier and website kicked me out… here’s a tl;dr verson of what I said.

Set weekly goals as those feel more attainable and less overwhelming. Choose one thing you’d like to do each week and make that happen. On my list, I chose to admit I have time and financial difficulties, so I made a list of little things sure to crack a smile, and, important for me this year, cost as little as possible. If you keep your list realistic, you are less likely to face disappointment. Then, if you get to do something extra it’s a joyful bonus. I think this year my joyful bonus will be a trip to Red River Gorge.

Dear Adventurers, Dreamers. & Gypsies,

This article post is near and dear to my heart and I have some advice for readers alike! Location is key when it comes to getting out and getting lost on this beautiful earth. Wide open spaces and untouched land can be hard to find on the East Coast. I hail from Lake Placid, New York – where the lush old growth forests are wonderful, but variety is hard to come by.

That is why I moved out west 3 years ago, if you are an adventurer and crave endless fields of wild flowers alongside water colored sunsets; While still trying to maintain a 9-5 job, than Salt Lake City might be a location for you to consider.

Salt Lake City is 4 hours from the Tetons, 4 hours from Wild Iris. 6 hours from Zion, 4 hours from Moab. It’s hard to decide what adventure to take when these epic play grounds are such a short drive away! It’s wonderful! Plus, when you’re in Salt Lake City during the work-week it has a thriving metropolis filled with art festivals, concerts, farmers markets, rock climbing, trail running, mountain biking … I would never consider moving back to the East Coast after being spoiled with such amenities – except to visit family of course!

Smiles & Love,

I can totally relate to the itch you feel to get moving and this year I’m also making steps to travel more — my plan is to dedicate more of my disposable income to travel, and to make the most of every opportunity — weddings out of town turn into week-long adventures; I’ve let all my friends know I’m looking for adventure and they’ve been sending me tips and invites to trips and cheap flights (friends are awesome!!!); and I’ve got notifications set up for cheap flights to my top spots around the world. The more you open yourself up to opportunities the easier it is to say yes to them =)

I am at this point right now, of wanting, no, needing to go somewhere…i’ve gone on week long vacays the last few years and this year I’m not going anywhere…so I’ve taken 9 days off from work in a week and I will be doing whatever I can to fulfill this travel itch that I am having…camping is first on the list for sure..i haven’t gone camping in so long and i am yearning for some one on one time with mother nature for a couple of days, to just unplug and unwind.

It’s weird, sometimes I think no plan is the best plan and other times I go nuts and need a to-do list. I’m yearning for an adventure–to see the world. I’m going through the toughest year of my life where I have to prepare for university and find out where my future takes me.

Is it odd for guys to read this blog? I hope not; this blog is life.
One of my friends and I are going to Okinawa for the entire month of Aug. and I’m spending a week in Yosemite as a cabin-leader for a youth camp in July (this will be my third trip to Yosemite this year!!!). While we’re in Okinawa, we’re planning to fly up to the mainland to spend a few days hiking around Mount Fuji, enjoying the hot springs there, and watching a floating lantern festival!
In the everyday, though, adventure has found me in so many different places; conversations with friends, trying new recipes in the kitchen, cooking with friends, investing in the lives of young people, reading new books, revisiting old well-loved books, re-arranging my living space over and over and over again…adventure, to me, has become an attitude, a state of mind (or heart, rather). It’s so thrilling!

Just got back from the Red River Gorge in Kentucky. Went camping and hiking for 3 days, it was absolutely beautiful and perfect weather! Did 23 miles all together. Hiked Indian Staircase, Auxier Ridge, Courthouse Rock and Double Arch to name a few. Explored all these trails on a whim with a friend and my pup! The whole thing was cheap, healthy and a clean place to clear the mind. G’on and getchu sooome

I loved reading this blog. I recently moved to NYC for the summer, and there’s so many places and things I want to do before I leave. I love NYC but I crave nature and tranquility within the city so I’ve been meaning to explore areas that are calm and fresh. I love the idea of a summer bucket list to make sure I hit all the spots that will make the city feel more special to me!

I’m getting married in a week, so I totally feel this way! Planning and such has taken up every spare moment, so I’m itching for our honeymoon. We are headed to D.C, Philly, Boston/Cape Cod, Bar Harbor, Maine, Quebec, and Toronto on one wild adventure!
