“My parents are both wildly spirited creatures,” says NYC-based poet and artist Cleo Wade, who originally hails from New Orleans. “I was raised to be highly expressive, which manifested itself into words very early,” adding that she started attending poetry camp when she was just 7 years old.

Her creative flair also shines through in her personal style—she’s got a natural knack for artfully layering dramatic prints and stacks of one-of-a-kind jewelry picked up on her globetrotting adventures with her friends, D.J. Mia Moretti and violinist Margot (nee Caitlin Moe). The three are all part of a female art collective called Chez Conversations. “Margot, Mia, and I travel very often together and we always make sure to scope out local artists. We each bought the most beautiful paintings when we were in Marrakesh last October from a local artist in the souk,” she says.

When Wade isn’t trolling the souks or at a fabulous party, the East Village artist’s day-to-day look is all about functionality. “My style kind of has two personalities,” she says. “80 percent of what I wear is very relaxed, I wear jeans and a T-shirt because I spend most of my time working. It’s important for me to feel comfortable when I am writing or painting.” One of her favorite pairs of jeans at the moment? The wide leg Free People denim pants she wore for her shoot.

As for her work, she just wrapped up a book of love poems and she’ll be doing a few readings in Manhattan this summer. “I am working on a collection of paintings to exhibit later this year, and my arts collective Chez Conversations will be doing something special in Big Sur this summer,” she says. “Everything I make is a part of myself, I enjoying sharing with others in attempt to be there for other people and make them feel either happy or less alone in lonely feelings (which we all have), so as long as what I’ve made has made even one person feel less alone, then I am very proud of the piece of work.”
