Photo Diary: Asheville, North Carolina

Jump into fall with this Asheville photo diary.

Mountain towns boast a very certain kind of charm — I imagine it has a lot to do with the folks who call them home. This is definitely true of Asheville, a welcoming, laid-back and always-ready-for-a-good-time city. If you’re a first-timer — in any city — buddying up with the locals can add so much flavor to your stay, if even for a night. This was true of our experience in Asheville, and we dove into the best of what it has to offer.

For me, the city’s glory was most apparent in the mountain peaks surrounding it. It’s said that the Blue Ridge Mountains are called “blue” because of the trees that cover them. They release isoprene into the atmosphere which casts a moody haze over the mountains. But, with the strike of fall, this phenomenon was interrupted by the changing of the leaves. So we took a drive up the Blue Ridge Parkway for a closer look. The mountains seemed to have been laced in sunset. Warm gradients of red to yellow took charge, their colors so vibrant and full that I grew excited for the colder months ahead (which I typically dread).

Below the hills, we stayed toward Asheville’s west side, exploring most of Haywood Road. Asheville is one of those places where, even if you had all the time in the world, you still may not see all of its best spots. I wish had a few more days there, but that just makes a perfect excuse to plan another visit. Without further ado, here’s Asheville:
