Weekend Do: The Broad Museum

Los Angeles welcomes another museum to the art scene — say hello to The Broad Museum.

Since its opening in September, The Broad — LA’s newest contemporary art museum — has received massive media attention, and for good reason. The bi-level, 120,000 square-foot building is founded by philanthropists and art collectors Eli and Edye Broad of Los Angeles, and holds over 2,000 works of art. The post-war collection is one of the largest in the world and boasts artists such as Jeff Koons, Cy Twombly, Damien Hirst, Yayoi Kusama and Andy Warhol, to name a few. All of that is quite impressive, yes, but that’s not the only reason The Broad is one of our new favorite art establishments.

The Broad, located on Grand Street in downtown LA, also serves as The Broad Art Foundation’s worldwide lending library. The Foundation was created in 1984 as a leading innovative library, loaning art to museums and galleries worldwide — over 8,000 pieces, serving more than 500 museums and galleries which have partnered with The Broad. The lending library is dedicated to increasing global public access to art. The other cool thing: the library (known as the vault) is in view of its guests, so you can actually see the art as you pass from one level to the next. Pretty amazing, right? The Broad also offers free admission. AND you are allowed to take photos inside. AAAAND they host various performances and conversations throughout the week, as well as musical artists, film screenings and family weekends.

So far I’ve been twice and it’d been incredible. There are so many phenomenal galleries in L.A. that should also be mentioned beyond the museums. Also you guys might want to include that tickets are sold out until mid-January.
