Aprés Ski

Share in the joy of Apres Ski with contributor Kiara Schwartz at one of Switzerland’s sweetest resorts.

This time every year, I pack up my things and head home to Switzerland, a fortunate escape from busy city life to disappear into my hometown and surrounding mountain villages.

Ever since I can remember, the Aprés ski, or after ski, ritual has involved warming hands over a fire with hot cocoa or tea in the cozy corner of a mountain restaurant and, if done right, brings all the cozy feels after a day of being sporty and preps you for the best sleep you ever had. After a day full of mountain air, an evening next to a warm fireplace, and enjoying local drinks and live music, you will know what is a true Swiss ski day tradition. The Swiss ski resort in LAAX called the Rock Resort does Après ski like no other. At the mountain base, you can simply click off your skis or unbuckle your snowboard and head into an array of perfectly cozy restaurants and bars, always bustling no matter the weather. Rosy cheeks and steaming cups are everywhere in the little rock town.

I’ve got two favorite stops here — the Indy Bar, where you can order the local favorite, the “Cafi Lutz” –coffee with plum liqueur, guaranteed to warm you from the inside out, and fill your heart with the sounds of nostalgic sing-alongs.  Dress code? Mountain gear. With gloves and beanies and jackets piled on each table. You can hang until bedtime and crawl right into sleep (if you are staying right in the rock resort). Repeat tomorrow!

There’s also countless fun to be found in the main square, from live bands or farmers’ markets. For something a little more subdued, you can check out more family-friendly lounges like the new Rocks Lounge, where you can cozy up on fireside sofas — in or out — which are hard to resist come nap time. Wind down with some wine and a local mountain cheese plate. Of course, there’s always the traditional après ski meal, the “Gaersta Suppa” a barley soup that will revive your heart, tummy and toes after tackling the day’s snow.

If you’re still in a festive mood, there is one spot where everyone, tourists and locals alike, descends for late-night fun — the Riders Palace. For those who want to indulge in a real Swiss winter tradition, the Rock Resort a favorite spot to visit while in town.
