West Coast Weekend DO: LACMA

Hey Angelenos, lose yourself in art this weekend at the largest art museum in the western US –LACMA.

I have to admit that, in all the years I’ve spent in LA,  I’ve never visited LACMA. Actually, truth be told, I didn’t know what LACMA stood for! (Please don’t tell any of my friends). But all of that all changed this week when I finally took myself on a date to the mid-city art museum. I got dressed up (because I think it’s cool to dress up for museums), brushed my hair, strapped on my camera, and headed out the door. I was excited. I love immersing myself in art, especially among the greats like Matisse, Warhol, Kandinsky and Picasso. The energy in those rooms is palpable and the subsequent inspiration is undeniably infinite. (Also, LACMA stands for Los Angeles County Museum of Art… don’t worry, I got you.)

According to the museum’s website, LACMA is the largest art museum in the western United States, with a collection that includes over 120,000 objects dating from antiquity to the present, encompassing the geographic world and nearly the entire history of art. To say that there is something for everyone at LACMA is an understatement. The campus is huge – over 20 acres – and consists of over seven separate buildings, hosting some of the most expansive art collections in the world. Visit all day and shop at the three LACMA stores and stay for a coffee, lunch or drink at either Ray’s & Stark Bar, the LACMA Cafe or C+M Coffee. Check out The Rain Room at Broad Contemporary Art Museum or the Frank Gehry exhibition at Resnick Pavilion, across the walkway. To explore LACMA is to truly experience art.
