5 Ways To Survive Your Next Sinus Infection

Beat your next sinus infection with these 5 tricks that will help you feel better, faster!

I’d like to think of myself as a pro when it comes to beating a sinus infection. Though I’ve been sick for about 1 1/2 weeks now, I’m fortunately on the up and up. And, as much as I’d like to fight it naturally, sometimes the only way is taking what the doctor orders; in this case, just 3 more days of antibiotics away from feeling 100%. But until then…the runny nose, the headaches, the annoying cough that causes achy muscles…its symptoms take a toll on the body. So how does one get through it?? Here are 5 (unique) ways to help survive your next sinus infection!

Neti Pot

Now , I’ve personally never tried a Neti Pot. But I know a handful of people who have and swear by them. Neti Pots help thin out mucus and flush it from your nasal passages. It’s a salt flush for your nose. A salt water solution goes in one nostril, then out the other. It’s like pouring a cup of tea for your nose, literally. The mechanism that allows easy passage of water is essentially a teapot. It sounds slightly scary, but enough people have vouched for them that I may just have to try the royal flush next time around. Pick one up at your local drugstore!

Vicks VapoRub

I learned this trick from my grandma: grab some Vicks VapoRub, apply a generous amount to the bottom of your feet before you go to bed, then cover with socks. If you have a persistent cough courtesy of your sinus infection, this trick is proven to help relieve coughing throughout the night! It’s worth a try. You can also rub some Vicks underneath your nose to relieve a headache.

Make This Ultimate Sinus Paste

This paste utilizes the healthiest ingredients currently in your kitchen; garlic, turmeric powder, ginger, onions and cayenne pepper. It sounds like something to ward away vampires (which, please by all means…), but to help relieve symptoms of a sinus infection, mix a pinch of said ingredients with some local honey to form the ultimate sinus fighting paste. Eat a spoonful of it, or try spreading on a piece of toast. It may not be the best thing you’ve ever tasted, but it’ll work!

Floral Facial Steam

Steam

Other than a Neti Pot, steam is the fastest way to break up mucus in a stuffed-up nose. Can’t breathe? Try this:

Boil a pot of water, place your head over the pot, and breathe in the steam (be careful not to breathe too fast or you may burn your nasal passage). Do this for a few minutes until you feel relief. You can also try incorporating an herb mixture for a more therapeutic steam, like this one.

Take a really hot shower. Make sure the bathroom door is completely shut to hold in all of the steam!

You can also try a steam inhaler.

Netflix

Watch Netflix. A lot of Netflix. Or Hulu. Or whatever it is that you watch. The best way to overcoming any cold or sinus infection is REST. So after you’ve done all of the above, make yourself a cup of tea, put on your favorite movie or that new show you’ve been dying to watch and r e l a x.

This would have been a life saver over Christmas. I’ve had a residual infection that I finally managed to kick last week but I’m intrigued by the neti pot so might try that next time round…

I get sinus infections all the time. I swear by using a Neti pot. Just be sure to follow the instructions and resist the urge to blow water out of your nose! Let is stream out naturally. Otherwise, you can get water in your middle ear, and trust me, it’s no fun!

What a lot of people do not take into consideration is the lack of sufficient moisture in the air during the winter with the dry air from the furnace. You should have at least 40% humidity in your home at all times, I keep several humidistats around and keep a humidifier going upstairs and downstairs, I really like the steam ones, no changing filters, it has a fog that evaporates into the air. Without enough moisture, the bugs grow in your sinuses and cause a lot of problems. First you get a scratchy dry throat, then it gets sore, then your head fills up with mucus, then it gravitates down into the chest, a vicious cycle.

The terms “sinus infection” and “sinusitis” are commonly used interchangeably, but sinusitis simply refers to the inflammation of the sinuses, with or without an infection. A sinus infection occurs when the sinuses become inflamed and swell up because of a viral, bacterial, or fungal infection. Sinus blockage often precedes this inflammation. Top Causes: Allergies, Nasal polyps, congenital diseases, Asthma and other reactive diseases.
