Artist’s Palette: Finding Inspiration in Nature

“Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.” Pablo Picasso.

Art is freedom. Art is awareness. Art is connection. For those who can’t breathe without it, art is life.

Nature is freedom. Nature is awareness… and nature is connection. Is it just a mere coincidence that art and nature are so closely linked? I think not. Though to call myself an “artist” is to go out on a limb, I can’t disagree with the fact that whenever I am in nature, I am overwhelmingly inspired to create. The dust of everyday life, like Picasso said, simply washes away and makes room for creation.

There is a place in Death Valley called Artist’s Palette that ignites such inspiration. Metals like iron, mica and manganese become oxidized and produce vibrant colors of red, pink, yellow, green and purple on the massive mountain landscape. Not only is the general inspiration overwhelming, but so is the large scale of these natural colors. To explore this place is to walk on an oversized artist’s palette. Your feet crunch the colors below. Your body feels miniature, as though in one swift swoop of a paintbrush you will be whisked away into oblivion. But as your body shrinks, your mind expands. Inspiration rushes in as the surrounding becomes your muse. It’s these times in life we must let wash over us.

I also find the most inspiration when I am exploring the nature around my house :)
I think it is very important to go outside every day (maybe not in winter but in the other seasons) to breathe and make the head clear again.
Death Valley and the ” Artist’s Palette are definitely on my travel list after this post. :)
