Styling Story: Desert Drifter

A closer look at our new lookbook, Desert Drifter.

“Sun-drenched hues and earthy effortlessness combine with all-natural neutrals to embody the dreaminess of a desert escape.” I had to read this thought a few different times this morning to really let it sink in. Each time I scanned it, I found myself saying, “yes. Yes. YES.” Sun-drenched hues… effortlessness… all-natural… dreaminess… desert escape… Uh, yeah, I’m on board. The latest lookbook, Desert Drifter, has caught me by storm. It is earthy and natural, while being undemanding and sexy. Fringe, suede and western accents are stand outs in this look, as they take on a modern silhouette and forward styling. I asked Coryn, who styled the shoot, a few questions about Desert Drifter. Below, she shares tips, tricks and a few of her favorite items.

How would you describe Desert Drifter?

Desert Drifter is one of my favorite trends we have created so far. A strong color story of earth tones with statement accessories and hints of military — a playful mix of sensual and tough attitude. We had fun with the hair for this — lots of braids and texture. I see this story as a cool take on festival for spring.

What kind of girl do you see wearing Desert Drifter?

This girl likes mixing a sensual top with easy boyfriend jeans or a military jacket — she’s sexy and fearless. I loved all of the fringe and layered jewelry for this story. I see this girl as someone courageous who wants to make a statement.

Which look is your favorite? … And favorite item?

Oh man, I loved so many pieces from this…. The Starry Night Capelet is absolutely incredible and I love pairing it with something unexpected like high-waisted jeans. All of the western inspired belts and shoes were awesome. I also loved the Drop Waist Jacket in deep wine suede — so buttery and soft, paired with the Iris Printed Crop Bell. I liked how the tones in that look work with the Red Rocks.

Can you share any styling secrets with us to achieve this look?

I think it’s all about something fitted and sexy paired with something loose and casual — a bit of boy and girl. You can get away with a wild belt or snakeskin boots if you mix them with something simple and classic.

Free People, I always love the way you guys style an outfit, but you’ve got to chill out with the white girls wearing turquoise and braids in the desert. It just looks, and feels, wrong.

I actually tried one of the looks in a Cold Desert in Leh- India. Its works well in both climate. Layers allow you to just shift from one climate to another + maintain the comfort.
BTW loved the eye brows of your model
