Earth Day Face Mask: Bentonite Clay

Let the Earth detox your skin with this 100% natural face mask.

This post comes from our blog intern, Emily.

I’m surprised I don’t use bentonite clay more often. Also known as Montmorillonite, bentonite is one of the most effective and powerful healing clays. It has been used by ancient cultures throughout history and can be used externally and internally.

I purchased this clay which is touted as “…bentonite clay from Death Valley, California, where it is sun-dried for up to six months in temperatures that sometimes reach 134 degrees. This brand confidently claims it’s the world’s most powerful facial… smoother, brighter, smaller-pored skin awaits after just one use (wearing from 10 to 30 minutes).”

Bentonite is a swelling clay and has slightly magnetic qualities, so when it becomes mixed with liquid it rapidly swells open like a sponge. This is how toxins, heavy metals, impurities and chemicals are sucked out from deep within your pores. It unclogs your pores and then shrinks them. When it comes in contact with a toxin, chemical, or heavy metal, the clay will absorb the toxin and release minerals for the body to use. It also helps get oxygen to cells by pulling excess hydrogen and helping the cells to replace it with oxygen instead.

Some benefits to reap from this super simple face mask:

  • Controls the overproduction of sebum
  • Reduces acne
  • Draws toxins out
  • Exfoliates
  • Makes skin softer
  • Reduces appearance of scars
  • Gives an even skintone
  • Prevents blackheads
  • Makes skin clearer, fresher, and more vital over time

Bentonite Clay Face Mask

Ingredients:

3 Tbsp bentonite clay

3 Tbsp Bragg’s Apple Cider Vinegar

A glass bowl

A non-metal utensil for stirring

Mix the clay and vinegar with a non metal utensil (metal makes the clay less effective) and then apply evenly on face, avoiding the eyes. Leave mask on to dry for up to 30 minutes. If it is your first time using a clay mask or if you have sensitive skin, it is recommended to only leave on for 10 minutes and then increasing from there the next time you use. You skin will adjust and react differently the more you use! Wipe your face clean with warm water. Your skin will most likely have redness, but this will fade.

That’s it! If you’re skin is feeling a little dry, put some moisturizer on and a of spritz rose water!

There are so many ways to use Bentonite Clay! Next time, I’ll try mixing mine with aloe, rose water, or almond oil for a more soothing mask.

I have been doing this for quite some time now at least once a week. It’s fantastic! One thing worth noting is that you shouldn’t wash it off in the sink. Wipe it off with a damp paper towel before you wash off your face, otherwise it can clog your drain!

I love bentonite clay! Been using it for a few months now, it makes my skin feel soooo soft. Even though it does feel tight on your face when it dries and can be slightly uncomfortable, it’s so worth it!!

Cool recipe. I love bentonite clay. I have a recipe for a face mask with bentonite and activated charcoal:http://www.craftylittlegnome.com/2016/03/16/activated-charcoal-face-mask/

First time I tried it it left me red/ raw/ post facial/ deeply irritated skin and mood wise, now I’ve gone through three tubs of it because I use it so regularly. The trick is to follow IMMEDIATELY with a light moisturizing mask of some kind. Even better if you can turn it into a three step process: Exfoliating mask, Clay Mask, gentle Moisturizing mask–you get a mini-facial glow. if your skin is really sensitive you can mix it with water/ cold cream/ aloe gel/ honey to get the effects without irritating your skin, but honestly ACV is the best the way to go.

HONEY MASK: Apply uncontaminated honey (straight from the bottle) to your face and your neckline. Allow it to locate until dry (about 15 minutes). Rinse with very temperate hot water. For more http://breaktheq.com/blog/very-cheap-face-mask-treatments-from-your-cupboard/

so I’m currently using it with french green clay because it’s all i had lying around and ACV… so we shall see how it goes. Rumor has it, both clays are amazing. But next time I will invest in some bentonite.

The trick with clay is not to let it dry completely. This is the end of the beneficial phase where your face has absorbed all the benefits of the clay. The dry phase where it becomes super hard and cracked is the phase where it’s pulling out all the moisture in the face leaving it red and irritated. Wash it off right before it starts getting hard. Hope this helps.

I can never mix my clay mask with only ACV. It stings my eyes like crazy when I have it on my face. I dilute the ACV with water before mixing it with bentonite clay.
