Why You Need: Love + Sage

Keep your lips happy and hydrated with the ultimate all-natural lip balm…

This post comes to us from our beauty contributor, Allie White.

If there’s one thing you can never have enough of, it’s lip balm. In a perfect world, every bag, pocket, table, room and car cup holder would be stocked with an assortment of the stuff so it was always within reach, ensuring your lips were never chapped, never peel-y, never cracked.

Alas, this is not a perfect world. And while hoarding lip balms may be a bit excessive, wanting to take care of your lips is not. After all, what’s worse than a dry, chapped pout? Not only is it uncomfortable from the very start, but then you’re probably going to do that thing where you try to pick the dead skin off with your fingers and teeth, resulting in a weird scab on your lip that’s a different color than the skin around it, that kind of stings when you run your tongue over it, which you’re definitely going to do.

Luckily for you and your lips, there’s a sea of lip balm options to choose from and, with descriptors like “hydrating” and “moisturizing” and “protecting” and “relief,” there’s something for everyone.

But how to choose?

If the mark of a great lip balm is that your lips are smooth and soft immediately after application, that narrows the field down a bit. And if an amazing lip balm is one that you don’t need to reapply every ten minutes because it does its job for hours at a time, the list shrinks even more. And if a hall-of-fame lip balm is one that’s lovingly hand-crafted with all-natural, non-toxic ingredients in small batches, then there’s really only one option: Love + Sage.

Founded by lifelong New Yorker Sage Lehman, Love + Sage started out as a hobby. But after Lehman was left unimpressed by the drying, gooey lip products that were on the market, she got to experimenting. “I wanted something moisturizing but that would also give a bit of color and shine,” she says. “I pretty much make things I want myself.”  And thus a hall-of-fame-worthy lip balm line was born.

The Brooklyn-based company has mastered the “do one thing and do it perfectly” approach to products. Their collection consists solely of four shea butter, coconut oil and beeswax-based lip balms, each with a slightly different formula depending on your needs:

  • Sunday Morning is for the sensitive-lipped. It’s non-tinted and dreamily scented with bergamot, neroli and rose oils.
  • Mint Condition is for when your lips need serious rescuing from harsh, dry weather. Between the avocado oil, vitamin E and mint, it’ll protect your pout from just about anything.
  • Beach Rose has a light, universally flattering pink tint that smells like a rose garden and protects against UV rays.
  • Well Red offers a totally natural sheer red tint thanks to the inclusion of alkanet root, and the neroli and sweet orange oils will have you trying to sniff your mouth all day.

Made with only the purest plant-based ingredients, each balm is basically safe enough to eat. (Though not recommended, Lehman shared that her three-year-old “has, on occasion, actually eaten a lip balm.”)

The coconut oil base means the balms are antibacterial, moisturizing, healing and great at reducing water loss in dry skin. And the two tinted versions manage to provide some UV protection. What’s more, the ingredient lists are very short, and every single word is pronounce-able.

If that’s not MVP status, we’re not sure what is.
